|
|
|
Hi Guys,
This is for all those interested in Manual Difflockers, I posted this in the Can I buy Difflockers thread.
I Spoke to Andrew at KAM Diffs and he was very helpful and willing to get something on the market, With enough interest and big enough order I'm sure we can get something out there.
KAM Diff quoted the following prices (They are all plus VAT if living in the UK):
1500(GBP) for the Prototype. - Have to split this between everyone.
850(GBP) For Manual Rear Locker with LSD (Patented, Thats right LSD and manual locker in one diff lock) and KAM Diff shafts.
650(GBP) For Manual Rear Locker with KAM Diff shafts.
620(GBP) For Manual Rear Locker with LSD using original Niva shafts.
480(GBP) For Manual Rear Locker using original Niva shafts.
Everyone who is interested please PM me. We need a minimum of 10. Members of other Niva forums around the world, please do what you can to spread the word and stir up interest.

Heres What KAM's catalogue says about there half shafts:
"KAM shafts have greater flexibility and are approximately 40% stronger
than standard shafts. The KAM shafts have been used for the last 16 years in many trial & competition vehicles world wide. Last year KAM supplied over 5000 shafts, of which many were supplied to the Military and competition applications."
Also found this interesting, maybe some people were keen on this conversion?
"We produce a range of CV’s that are an up-rated version of the standard part. The picture shows a CV conversion kit that replaces the 32 spline CV for a stronger 23 spline assembly suitable for Land Rovers. This allows use of the stronger 24/23 spline halfshafts.
The CV cup offers around a 35% increase in strength over a standard CV.
Unique to KAM; we have developed stub shafts that are fusible. They are designed to shear at a preset level of torque. This protects the rest of the driveline and only incurs 5 minutes of vehicle downtime to replace. 3 Stub shafts are supplied in the kit, 2 to fit and 1 as a spare."
Anyone think of anything they would like to see done to a front or rear Niva diff? KAM's facilities are pretty huge and they manufacture alot for the military, The CV conversion above looks the goods would be interested to know the price.

The only thing I am thinking of doing, a little off topic, is using a steel rear diff and cutting it down and modding it as did someone else here (crb247?) and make it into a front diff.
That way you would order 2x rear manual lockers, and the front wouldn't blow up on you.
I see no problem with the Niva's standard shafts! Not like she makes THAT much power

I am just waiting for an exact priceof how much these will cost. I know how much the steel is going to cost for the actual case, but I am trying to get the end caps made cheaper to bring the end cost down a bit. At the minute they are sitting around the £90/£100 mark each. postage would be a factor.
unfortunately though (and I can understand why) pople can't justify the expense especially in the current financial climate for such an upgrade. I will however be able to make them to order, so will keep everyone posted on my developments. I need to make a trial one first and get the mounts etc made up.

If you can make them for 100 GBP, I don't see why anyone wouldn't buy them, that's cheeeeeep !!!
Are they going to be bolt on, or do you have to fab your own mountings??

if they are to be mounted to the engine they will be bolt on, but down to the fact that I don't have a niva with a standard engine etc to work from if you want to mount it to the cross member, then you would have to fab your own mounts.
I know it's cheap, especially as it's a fully fabbed housing, and the russian site sells them for the equivelant of about £600 made from axle housings....

The crossmember and the swaybar, is by far the better option. And my engine don't support the engine mounted diff anyway :p

That's who it was!
Double rear lockers and no blown diffs; now that's a treat!

480 GBP = 856 CAD (Canadian Dollars)
Tack shipping on, and I'm looking at at least a grand for one locker... brutal!
But, lockers make it THAT much better So, I'm in.
Can you estimate a weight / size for shipping? I'm wondering what it's going to cost to get it across the pond. I'd even take 'ground' shipping, or send it by boat.
How will we arrange funds? Through paypal? We need someone we trust to manage all that hard earned coin!

If they are a reworking of the design they use for other vehicles, which would seem most likely, then yes it can be a DIY job.
I have a job to fit 4 into two pairs of Landy axles coming in soon.

Here's a reply I just received from KAM Diffs.
Scott
Good morning to you, thank you for coming back to me and I trust that you had a good weekend.
Yes we are interested in taking this forward, but we would need to have a front and rear axle here for appraisal, which will take an hour or two at any time and then here for the development work. We would also need to see a vehicle so that we can get an idea of bracketry on and around the axles.
Realistically the earliest we will be able to start on the Lada lockers will be 3 months, possibly a bit longer.
We have recently developed a new locker system that does not require unique half shafts, i.e. can use the original half shafts and we are looking at developing this even further with further cost savings.
Approximate Costs- Current
The cost of this new locker starts at £538.00, (based on Land Rover prices).
The LSD costs £668.00, (based on Land Rover prices).
The half shafts start at £120.00, (based on Land Rover prices).
Approximate Weights
The weight of the LSD will be approximately 10-11kilos, (based on a land rover diff locker).
The weight of the locker without half shafts will be approximately 12kilos, (based on a land rover diff locker without half shafts).
The weight of the locker with half shafts will be approximately 20kilos, (based on a land rover diff locker with half shafts).
Please let me know if I can help further.
Andrew Reid
- I'm hoping if we're ordering 5-10 the price will come down.
Scott.

Indeed.
Where are they being sent? I'm in Ontario, Canada, so I'm ASSUMING it's not worth me sending them, though I do have a spare pair....
maybe they just need the diff guts, and not a whole damn axle/diff housing?
Would be cheaper shipping...

I'm quiet confident I can arrange it all from here, What they need is a complete car with diff's out. Maybe the closest member to Surrey that can help out, please contact me.
I'm keen as custard to get this done, even if I need to outlay some of my own cash, I think once it's out there available for retail it will be a big hit and sort after "cult like" item for Niva's you could say.
It's nearly half the bloody cost of a K&S!

| There's enough interest for about 7 or 8 now, I'll email KAM asking what sort of price we'll get if we order 10, Then I'll be able to give you all a rough price including delivery, This price will include the the monies needed for the prototype, which will be divided amongst us.

More than likely we will pay a deposit directly to KAM via Credit card, then send the rest of payment when there ready to ship.
Not confirmed but most likely option, These small details we can work out easy enough.

Hi Guys,
We've got enough Interest for 8, Lets try make it 10 before I email KAM again.
Anyone else interested? Full payment will not have to be made for roughly 2-3 months. You will take delivery of your locker in about 4 months.
Scott.

Hi Everyone
Jump on www.royalmail.com to work out the postage costs. They are not the cheapest but gives you a general Idea.
Weight is 10-11kgs or 20kgs with KAM Shafts.
