Just bought a '64 404. Reckon I paid over the odds but there you go. Chassis and body are pretty well ok. Cab is in a state. Engine runs but only been run once in two years so needs sorting. Brakes don't exist, will probably need new master & slave cylinders. Any of you moggers out there with any brake parts, or any parts, would become new best friends instantly!! I am also going to be looking for a front PTO assembly and Werner winch so if anybody can help me with those I would appreciate it.

Notts!!!

It's not a Swiss from what I have been told. Once I have chance to get to the brakes I will let you know a little more. Thanks for the info, as I had no idea they were different.

I have some parts ,will hsve a look see what i have ,TRY BLEADING THE SYSTEM MINE WAS FINE AFTER CHANGING FLUID NEEDS TO BE DOT 3 IF I REMEMBER RIGHT WILL CHECK ,WRONG FLUID DAMAGES SEALS ALL THE BEST FROM NOTTINGHAM

Dennis, just realised that you are in the USA!! Thanks again for the info, it is very welcome I assure you.

I bought an English version of the Mog handbook which is proving invaluable. Having spoken to Manfred at Westfield 4x4 I have been told that the ignition system and fuel system need to be checked thoroughly. To be quite honest information and advice is as valuable as parts at this juncture. I intend to use the Mog for various tasks including hauling a boat and trailer up and down a steep (60% ish) and slippery river bank. Do you reckon the standard gearing will be low enough or should I look at the crawler set? Boat & trailer weigh around 1500kgs. Are there any particular things that I should look out for on the Mog?

I am trying to post a picture but the ones I have are 324kb and the attachment thingy keeps telling me that 200 is the max allowed. Any idea how to sort it please?

Appreciate your input guys.

i have some 404 brake parts i also have a pto unit if you pm me with what your after i might be able to help as im going to discs i wont need them
as for being low geared yes they are but what you will find on slippy slopes is getting enough traction from the tyres
(your about to say its got difflocks so it be fine) but when all four wheels are spinning your still not going to move
you might find loading the rear with ballast will press enough weight to get the tyres to grip

hi mark, pic resizing i just right click(with the mouse) on the pic i want then scroll down to pic resize, pick size and left click .go back to your pic's you'll have 2 pics different size's and it will say small-medium-large then upload as usual.i got (WINDOWS) if that doesn't work try http://bigwebpages.com/big/resize.html ...nice a simple to use....PS there is a system on difflock but ive never used it.........hope this help's Ricky

I'm thinking a coating on any part of the cylinders would just burn off?

Dennis you are a star. Printing all this off and giving it my mechanic mate who is dealing with the initial sorting of engine and brakes so I can drive it.

I am going to the disc brake conversion this spring as my next big project. Not a cheap venture, but as I love the mud I think it will be worth it. I am using the kit from exact out of canada. They seem to be the best quality I have found so far, and the heaviest parts, maintains labyrinth seals, heavy duty truck calipers etc. I have already sourced a set of US Army HMMWV wheels that should bolt right up and have the run flats built into them.

My hardest issue was with the master cylinder. I don't have air assist so I am afraid the stock system wouldn't push the 4 wheel disc brakes. I have found a hydraulic booster/master cylinder from 1 ton GMC trucks is set up for 4 wheel disc brakes and should give plenty of solid pedal. The hydraulic booster fits up under the floor without a problem and has an adjustable length to give the right stroke length on the plunger.

I just have to fabricate brackets to mount the power steering pump (to power the brake booster), mount and plumb the booster/cylinder combo, convert all 4 wheels to the disc brakes..............nothing to it! hahahahahah

SOME CARS YOUSE A ELECTRIC POWER STEERING PUMP WOULD THIS BE AN EASIER WAY AS IT WOULD GIVE BOOST WITH A DEAD ENGINE.

Guys,
I have fitted the entire brake system as far as the master cylinder from a Leyland Roadrunner truck and it works well.
The combined compressor and and hyd power steering pump unbolts from the Leyland, I fitted a blank plate with oil seal and belt drove it.
I used all the air tanks, the pedal valve fits into the Mog pedal cluster.
The existing Mog hydraulic lines come from the to std brakes and they stop dead!
I have dual air,dual hydraulic and a separate 4 wheel winching brake.
I can try and do pics if anyone wants?
