Is it EP diff oil you are using? If so it has a very pleasant, delicate boquet. Mind you, some of the people on here who lack any suggestion of finesse think it stinks worse than pig s*** on a bad day. Please don't tell me I am the only one who is wrong.
If you want to know what diff oil should smell like buy some new stuff and sniff it. If you want a good quality diff oil, or any other oil for that matter buy the difflock oils.

Ive never smelt any diff oil before.
I never knew they needed any "special" oil in them.

diff oil stinks so you can tell the difference between engine oil and gear oil stored in unmarked cans..

Just replaced a cooked auto box in an Optare, think it took a good day or two until i got rid of the smell on my hands. Hate the stuff.
Same as burning plastic, had a cooked donkey engine in a sweeper that completely melted the filler cap, you could smell that in the workshop for weeks.
Gear oil's not so bad.

Always best to wear disposable gloves and avoid spilling any on your clothing otherwise it will be tainted forever and you will not be allowed back in the house.

put the breathers into the cab behind your seat. you get the lovely smell as the transmission warms up... if you can smell it too much, you know a bearing is on the way out

The smell of EP90 is a wonderful aroma. It keeps witches (the wife) away for hours and hours.
When are Landrover going to market it as an aftershave?

I can't believe that no one has given the reason yet. It is because it has sulphur in it. That is why it eats into yellow metals, etc. Some newer ones will state that they are safe with yellow metals and you will find that they do not smell as bad.

Me and my mate got some EP90 from an Impreza rally car on our clothes when we helped a loocal lad out on Rally GB with a knackered box.
Had to throw some of the clothes away, and the smell is just fading on my waterproof coat - took nearly a week to get off my hands!
My fleece is knackered as well, has been washed anouit 3 times and seems fine initially, but then after a week it goes all greasy and starts to smell again!

Another good description is "Cat Wee"
I love the smell of hot EP90 that eminates from a vehicle thats been working hard.
The Fully synthetic gear oils from Difflock stink even worse than the mineral EP90 that they replace!
I also love the smell of a tractor burning red diesel first thing on a morning.
I must have a sulpher problem!
