I've always (I think that's probably quite an accurate amount of time ) loved mogs. Could never justify the cost / size of a 404, but have just put down a deposit on a 411 (not the first 411 I've had a punt on either)
Sooo rather than just reading about you guys and your trucks, hopefully in about 4 weeks when I collect a non running rusty old 411 I can stand with my head held high (OK not as high as some of you in your lofty cabs ) and also be the proud owner of one of the coolest trucks ever built (come on the coolest has to be the tatra 813 )
No doubt I'll be on here asking loads and loads of questions, but for now, just a wave and a hello

That sounds like the usual bullsh*t story when you have been stitched up by the seller and he's had a better offer.Sorry to hear that. So, what's your budget, if you don't mind me being a little bit nosey.

For a non running 411 with everything in place. 500 <> a bit. I've had a punt on a few which sold around that figure so not out of place I don't think ???

Shaggy,
That's the one I'd arranged a sale with. David said he wated 5 for it, we agreed, I sent deposit, then got a text a few hours later.
Didn't a dokia go through the bay and sell for about 700 a couple of weeks ago?

the blue dorka was in burnley and went for £620 which wasnt bad because the only thing usable was the axels
as for 404 they tend to come up cheeper because of the amounts that have been made and sold where as the 411 was done in less numbers and tend to be more collectable hence the higer prices
but im sure one will come your way (not sure at £500 though)

I've seen a few 411's go for about <> that price.
I'm just a little peeved that the price was agreed, a sale had been made, deposit sent, then backout on being told it had been sold to someone else and low and behold it's just sitting on ebay
TBH, as long as the main structure is there, and the axles and 'gbox are present and complete, body work and chassis welding I can do.
I don't have a big budget, but I do have a big welder
hurmph, still very disapointed at the moment. Another one will come along, I know that, just back to waiting and looking.
If anyone knows of anything ???

If he has already sold it,then you may as well bid it to the moon.At least you will get the opportunity to leave appropriate feedback, unless he randomly pulls it...

I'm tempted myself for a little friend for my 404. Or do I just want to rip the axles off, sorry I know it's very cute but I'm heartless!

If it's got transmission and a chassis
I've seen 3 - 4 in OK ish condition go for around that kinda price, just not on 4x4 forums. Old barn sales, farm auctions, places like that where people aren't interesting in the heap of rust at big money. There's a lot of things kicking around the back of old sheds which come up for sale occassionally. I'm talking about a period of 3 - 4 years I've been seriously looking, so I'm in no hurry.
I'll just sit back again and watch, might say hello again in time to come - actually - WILL say hello again

heh back again sooner that I thought I might be.
I've had a read through the FAQ's on benzworld, but has anyone got any pointers for things I should be specifically looking for on a 404?
Tyres, oil leaks, rattles knocks and bangs, rust in the floor of the cab, that kinda thing make sence, but is there anything portal / gearbox / chassis specific to the 404?
Waiting for some pics to turn up with a plan to view in a couple of weeks.

Hi fella,
- Cabs all rot in normal, visible places (there's not much hidden). There is a structural cross member across the bottom of the cab (with a structural "n" over the PTO hoop). Check that. The front cab mount is in the middle of this.
- Engines are pretty much bombproof (ours ran with a broken valve spring for god knows how long). But the military ignition can degrade, the wires are high resistance and can really screw with things. Check the radiator - expensive.
- Fuel system becomes a weakness with age, just due to crap in the system.
- Clutch and thrust bearing. THE BIG ONE! the gearbox and engine are suspended, and the axle forces go through the gearbox (via the torque tubes). This means dicking with the clutch is a pain. Two real issues.
-- If the clutch has been replaced, it may have been put on the wrong way round, because the new ones are different. If this happens the clutch plate fingers rub and it eventually breaks. Don't know how to diagnose, but be wary of clutch noises.
-- The throw out bearing can wear out and replacing that is so much of a pain, most people do the clutch as well (the bearing is 7 euros!). There is an inspection plate on top of the bellhousing, you have to remove the dog house cover to see it.
- Your other main worry are oil seals. A mog has 7 gearboxes (transmission, 2 * diffs, 4 * hub gears) which means a lot of seals.
-- Axle output seals are easy to diagnose and not the end of the world (although they can be), you can see them leak.
--Transmission output is a bad one - the oil leaks down the torque tubes and into the diff, contaminating it with non hypoid oil. Hard to diagnose, hard to fix. Check the tranny oil level (back passenger side of tranny).
-- Diffs can leak out into the axle, and into the hubs. Hard to spot.
Check the oil fillers for each gearbox, check there's oil at the top, and that it's OK.
Tranny might be toast, might not be. Get it fast enough to change all gears. I have to double declutch 6th until it is warm. Get them to show you how it works. There are many things that can be wrong (blocked passages, wrong oil, routine overheating). They are noisy, but not insanely so.
Brakes. Handbrakes are easy if the rest work. If it stops quickly and straight, it's probably OK! Check it rolls well - I am amazed by how easy they are to push in neutral. Check the flexible hoses (to front brakes, and between gearbox and torque tubes) as a reasonable indication of general care.
There's not that much other rubber on the mog, expect dampers to be toast, but look at the ball/socket joints on the various steering parts, they're hard to change.
If you can run it on the road, it should do 85kph on the flat cold, and 95-100kph when warm (all those gearboxes) with 10.5 tyres.
Come over one night and look at ours - it'll make much more sense.
jim

Cool, thanks Jim,
all sounds about OK, transmission sounded a bit offputting on the first read, by the fourth time it all makes sence.

There's a 404 parked around the back of my parents house at the moment (it's still sitting on the trailer and the jeeps cooling down as I type )
I'll put a piccy in the my mog section, but it's a dieselised 404 (3.5 ford 2402e engine) with a set of brand new mud pattern 10.5x20 tyres (still have the little rubbery bits on them) with PTO and a hydo over electric tipper bed on the back. No oil leaks that I've found and in a dyer need of a wash and dig out. Body works not great, but it was in budget, so I'm finishing a beer and going to bed a very happy person
Loads of thanks to Jim for a few emails and advice. And a mog will fit on a 6'6"x15' beaver tail if anyone is interested.
Oh and towing a mog on said trailer with a jeep on a 6 1/2 inch lift is um, interesting
