Hi all.
I'm sorry if this a often asked question, but I googled It and I have searched here on Difflock to no avail.
Anyway, back to my question.
I'm 15, 16 next year and I'm looking to start saving for my first car, now i'd love a LR for my first car, but i don't know if that is viable as I don't know how much I would need for a decent one that doesn't need too much work on it.
Does any one have a rough estimate of what I need to spend?
Many Thanks,
Brookie.

dunno. Problem with those, is that they fetch the amount folk are willing to pay for them. Sounds daft but true.
You'll hear of the folk who got an ebay bargain of a mint motor for a fiver, and folk who paid several grand for a piece of *****.
1500...minimum cost for something road-legal, safe, and stand at least some chance of not going boobies-up at the first opportunity!!

Right, ok many thanks. Thats good!
So just insurance to investigate now.
So I'd probably have to spend money in the future to keep it up to standard?

Best stick to a car for the first few years if i was you.....
Insurance when i was 17 for a 1L polo was £1100!
Get to know how to drive properly, get used to the roads etc first then think about a landy.
I'm 20 in 4 months and i have just insured a 93 defender 90 and the cheapest i could get was £1200, dare to think about it at 17!

Im 17, Got two MOT'd Landrovers, "Series 2a 2.25D" and a Defender 90 2.5TD... Me as a named driver on my dads policy with no "No claims" (He used them up on the other cars)
....
£850ish as a Learner, Paid monthly over 12 months on the series THIRD PARTY ONLY.... (I have no claims or convictions, And my dad has 3 points "SP30")
Bought the Defender 90, Was expecting to fork out an extra £500 on my exisiting policy to swap it over...
..
..
..
It was £15 cheeper than my existing policy!!!!! But I then changed it from TPO to TPFT and with all the transfer fees it came to about £890.... Next year it should be a lot cheeper with me being a year older and having my Pass-Plus
To put that into perspective.. A mate has a 1.6 2000' "W" Zetec fiesta..
£2500 on his dads policy!
Another mate with a 1998 1.4 SPAM...
£1100 on his dads policy!
And finally another mate with a 1.4 Ford Focus..
£3000 on his mums policy!
All being the same age as me and in the same area code..
Im with NFU but they are afair bit more expensive than Adrian Flux but adrian flux gave me quotes when I was looking at the age of 16 only for them to say they couldnt insure me due to my age soon as I hit 17!
So its actually not that bad at £800-900 quid on a Landrover 90 Turbo Diesel..

for insurance for me on my own policy
19, no ncb, 1st car
1991 200tdi defender £1500 tptf
my 1990 fourtrak 2.8tdi (a lot more powerfull, a lot faster, more seats 7, bigger, and a import ) £1600
im now 20 and when my insurance is up for renew in feb its going to drop to £800ish (cant remember the exact amount)
i found (for me anyway) i was cheaper to insure the 90/fourtrak than most cars

brookie - get a S3 tax exempt! Its then obviously tax exempt, also classic car so classic insurance!! You'll save yourself a bomb if you can do most of the work yourself!! But if you cant get a road legal one!!
Many thanks Mark

a tax exempt series in good condition that wont break down every 5 mins would fetch a fear bit of money mine is a 1972 series 3 in original condition except wolf wheels has been rebuilt the insurance company has just valued it at £4000, so a defender and paying tax would proberbly be cheaper, its had to find a good series, on the other hand im 26 and the insurance is £150 fully comp a year
the other thing with a series your looking at 60mph top speed and it takes a long time to get there
even if you include extra for the insurance a disco could be cheaper more comfy, reliable, and you can pick up a good one for less than a £1000

brookie, TBH the cheeper the Land Rover you buy the more you will spend on maintance every year.
Back in 1990 i bought my first Land Rover, a 1973 SIII.
In the first 3 months i spent over £3000 trying to keep it on teh road as it was a wreak when i bought it and it never ever kept running for more than a day with out some thing failing.
If you dont want to spend spend spend dont buy cheep get the best you can afford, if £3-4000 seams like too expensive for a budget SIII or Defender then i'm sorry your looking for the wrong 4x4.
And what ever you get its going to sting if you use it off road. TBH if i was starting again id start with an SJ or Vitara. Would of saved me thousands.

is spent £800 on keeping my series 3 on the road for the first 6 months then got fed up so compleatly rebuilt it which cost over £5000 but its should last another 35 years now and it starts first time
all landrovers break down wether its an early series or a late defender its hard to find one thats been looked after and they will always fetch alot of money for a decient one

i got a 2a at 15 and rebult it.
to buy road legal will cost all at once.
if possible you could restore...
a restoration you can spread the cost as cash comes and at the end of it all you know exactly what you got.
lot of work to do well though...
im 17 now and traded up (and in other ways down) to a 110
starting on insurance quotes now

I paid £500 for my series 3, I drive it every day to work. I've spent money on it since I got it, but there's been no major problem.
I have a friend who bought an ex mil 109 of Eblag for £89, spent £110 to register and MOT it and it's going strong.
You don't need to spend a lot to get a landy.

Hmm, It seems some people have good expiriences and others have bad ones.
That makes it even worse cause I still can't decide what to do!
Would it help if i said that i'd be doing nothing more challening that abit of Greenlaning and a few P&P days?

Long story short take a good Land Rover mechanic/specilist with you and have a good look at anything your looking at.
Take your time, if you want to find good and cheep it will take time unless your lucky. be prepared to look at heck of a lot of Land Rovers.
And even then even the good ones can have a few nasty treats in store. If your not too fussy and dont mind the odd roblem then a SIII will be ok.
Its a love and hate thing this Land Rover ownership game.

Everything that has been said is correct, just one other thing to remember, all series Landy's are slow, noisy & uncomfy, you need to look for a 200TDI, if you want it to go up to the legal limit IMHO, but check out the chassis, as they aren't as good as the series ones.

My 2a?...
£2500 in all...
£200 on the vehicle
£150 on rebuilding the engine
£550 on paint work
£50 on wheels
£50 on MOT
the rest was stuff like my wheel spats, spot lights, roll bar, a-bar (basically stuff you dont need)
I reckon I could have done it up to "road worthy" condition for £500 though.. But the biggest costs were the cosmetics..

You may find it helpful to join the Series II forum;
http://www.lrs2c.com/forum/index.php
or this one...
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/daveslandyandngstuff/
By comparison to Zooks etc, Series Landies are slow, noisy, and uncomfy... but great fun to drive (in my opinion!) If you want one, follow the advice above and buy one and enjoy it. If you don't, you may regret it.
But don't forget, the last Series motor was built 26 years ago!
