I am thinking of buying a 2002/2003 Discovery automatic but I have been told that the performance is appalling because it is an auto. Any comments?
I have also been told that Disco's regsitered after May 2002 where significantly better than previous models. Anyone know why?

I have heard the same. TD5 autos can be improved with chip upgrades etc. I have met quite a few people that have done this and they say it transforms the vehicle. I know JE do an upgrade for the TD5.
Have a look here

I've heard great things about TD5 Alive as well.

Go and try a few and see for yourself. That way you will know what you are comparing it with and can see how it will or won't meet your needs.

Never had issues with mine. I do a lot of towing of chippers, caravans, trailers etc and it never has given bad performance and always fairly responsive of what you want it to do. It recommends in the owners manual when towing leave it in 3. Ive never had to and it pulls a dream, A damn site better then the hilux auto and the transit ive previously towed with

I have looked into the TD5 discos lately and the ones after 2002 are better . The earlier ones were prone to all sorts of problems which were more or less sorted by 2002/2003 . the first engines were called the storm engine then later the storm 2 , Big jump in price though you can pick up early ones for next to nothing . servicing bills put me off though along with the amount of jobs I wouldn't be able to do myself and then having to trust the know nothing monkies at my local Land Rover dealers .. Still the later ones are nice cars if you the servicing doesn't put you off
