I've been offered a manual vit gearbox that has been modded so that it just has one output from the transfer box and this has been shortened and an adapter made to bolt the gearbox directly to the sj tranfer box leaving the sj transfer box in its origanal mountings. It all looks very well made but just wondered if anyone had any experience of these

It's from a little company in Derby, the chap there insists he designed and built it, do these boxes have any down sides? I'm concerned that the adapter for the SJ trannie looks a little flimsie

As soon as you put something like your conversion on a forum Richard and therefore the public domain there will always be someone who does it for themselves.
That's not to say it will be as good as the ones you do Wink

I'd like to see a pic of this 'conversion' (not Richards).

Dave did you really have one in the same vein as Richard's ??
It's a lot of work and no doubt Rob Storr is one of the few who are capable of such a mod.
I understand Rob is making stuff for F1 nowadays - probably pays a little bit more than zook stuff...

Nigel.

I'll have to look up Richard's I was just going by the description?

The one I had was the t-box removed and a cast blanking plate over the end with a bearing and drive flange machined into it... that drove an SJ mini-prop that fed into a Sammy t-box with 4.1:1 rock-crawlers in it...

Hang on, will find the photies... back in two mins Wink

This one has had the bulge to the O/S removed (where the forward prop drive would be) and the alloy casting repaired by welding a piece in, then at the end of the box where the rear prop drive would be there is a flat peice of ally bolted on with an approx 5" tube spacer with a flange that bolts to the SJ trannie, the SJ tranny has the input drive flnge removed and the remaining stub has the threaded part removed then an internally splined tube transmits drive

rob only does the blanking plate that does away with the vit t\case. Am i right in thinking thats what you had dave ie swap the vit t\case for an sj case with a short prop.

Richard,

Where's the full write up you did?
Can't find it now...

There's bits of it in the custom build section on your truck, 'zero'.

Nigel.

Nigel.

Have a good read of my dual case thread nigel and you will see there is some essential parts missing. A few people have had a go and come unstuck, Then asked me for info to try and finnish them.

Sorry to go off topic mate if you buy it then get intouch and ill give you some advise on fitting.
Iv done 18 of them now and yet to have someone thats unhappy .
The coupling is well up to the job however i do recommend that you build a skid pan that braces the 2 t\case's together aswell.

Yup Wink

At the time I was looking for an easier way of reducing the gearing after blowing a set of Calmini 5.83:1 ring and pinnions when another axle imploded... so it seemed sensible to stick the gearing up in the transfer box out of the way, only Calmini's Vitara t-box gearset only reduce the lowside of the t-case as the high side is just a pass thru? (from memory)...

So there was a lot more options at the time, remembering this was '02 / '03 when this was done, to fiddle around with the gearing in a sammy t-box that a vit t-box so as Rich' says Rob made me a blanking plate for the back of the gearbox with a bearing and a drive flange, so that a mini-prop could drive a sammy t-box with a set of his 4.1:1 sammy rockcrawlers in. The box also had the benefit of a two-wheel-drive-low, very useful in a Vit, I used to lane most of the time in two wheel drive Laughing (low).

That was all married up to a centerforce dual friction clutch and twin LSDs... pretty unstoppable she was... Crying or Very sad

Laughing
