Hi,

Not sure if this is the correct section to post this, but here goes:

Got an LPG'd 1988 3.5 EFI, Auto, RRC last week and it has covered the first 400 odd miles effortlessly...until tonight...

Doing a hill start tonight when there was a massive 'BANG!' from the front. Knew what had happened, stopped the car and noticed that the air pip between plenum and AMF was dislodged.

Put it back on and the car started...a wee bit rougher at idle though.

Anyway, stupidly (in hindsight, very) soldiered on using gas; 3 miles later 'BANG!' This time the pipe stayed on, but was now sporting some new ventilation half way down the pipe and the car refused to run.

AA came out, taped up the hole and the car started, would run on LPG, but not idle when on petrol, but it did seem to be drawing air in from around the base of the plenum at the front.

This was traced to a small hose at the rear, drivers side, of the plenum and a tube, possibly PCV?, being disconnected and drawing in excess air. With those hoses now connected the engine idles and runs very sweetly on petrol, but while it may still rev on gas, it doesn't even entertain the concept of idling!

What could have gone wrong to cause this?

On the run up, after buying the car, it returned around 15mpg on gas, but after this, the last fill up only worked out a 6mpg!! Part of this was a couple of the new plug leads not being sited properly on the new dizzy cap (and rotor), but the fact that it idled while drawing all the extra air, leads me to thing its running very rich now...

Any of this making any sense to anyone, or ringing any bells?

Thanks

Dave

There is a door opener for the AFM that is operated when running on LPG to let air through. The mechanism must have jammed a bit as operating the mechanism by hand freed it up and it now opens the AFM door fully when running on LPG
