I ended up behind one of these yesterday at a set of traffic lights in Reading. I have to say that it seemed to go quite well. When the lights went green it was quite swift and reached the 40mph limit of the road in quite a respectable time.

I don't know how hard it was trying, but the auto 300Tdi Disco I was driving was caught out a bit.

I wouldn't mind giving one a test drive to see what they are like.

Paul.

You could have a go in mine except for the small matter that the batteries are dead and it is in pieces. I was quite impressed with the performance too, considering it is an 15kW motor (continuous) with a peak overload output of 28kW (that's only 37bhp) - but the important bit is how it delivers the power.

The standard Ni-Cd batteries give it a range of 45 miles, but with a set of Lithium-polymer you could have 120mile+.

How many units of electricity does it take to charge the batteries?

Simple answer:
About 25 units for a full charge.
Equivalent to £2.50 for 45 miles, but much less if you recharge overnight on "economy-7", something like £1.00 for 45miles.

Discussion:
Ni-Cd is very poor in terms of charge/discharge energy transfer, known as coulomb efficiency. They only give back about 66% of the amp-hours you charge them with. In comparison Lithium batteries can exceed 99% coulomb efficiency. When my vehicle gets its new batteries and battery management system it will need something like 33 units of electricity (£3.30 standard rate or ~£1.30 night-time rate) to do 100 miles.

Don't ask how much the batteries are. Exclamation

Not explicitly. The technology is so new that I'm having to import my own cells and therefore taking on the disposal costs too.

As it happens the batteries last a long time and although we don't yet have proper recycling facilities for Li-ion, the time will come. I expect that with the price of raw materials likely to stay high, even dead batteries will have value, just like scrap cars are now worth a few hundred simply for the metal.
