ps, sorry to correct your grammar, but strictly speaking the phrase "Jeep thing" should actually read "Jeep thang" Wink

Offroadmdg are good from what I've been told- Mark Gasser certainly knows his jeeps. You could try Frog Island if they're still going, otherwise google the Jeepman - he's got some stuff too, but it tends to be OEM, I think. Of course there are our colonial friends such as 4WD or Quadratec - both should still get stuff here for Xmas, as they send it by UPS. USautomotive are another lot that spring to mind.

you could be a little more specific as to the parts you require, as said above mark (mdg) also, patrick (specialist leisure) are a good place to start.

from america try www.mad4wd.com

Wavey

the Jeepers aren't ignoring you it's just we tend to check J33P, JeepClub and ******** more often.

For Jeep Accessories I would try - in the UK:

http://www.offroadmdg.co.uk/ - I would pop in as you are close to Portsmouth and Mark's cave stocks lots that his website doesn't show.

http://www.specialist-leisure.co.uk/index.php - talk to Patrick, Mims has dealt with him a bit in the past and they seem to have got on well.

US Websites:

http://www.4wheelparts.com/4wp/index.asp
http://www.4wd.com/
http://www.quadratec.com/

Also I believe congrats are in order Very Happy Hope to see you around some of the Jeep Events soon.

Woody

Ahh now that would be telling you will just have to wait and see.Lets just say its all yellow well some of it !

Mind you i think it might be easer to make a few Wavey Built bits for the wrangler than get them. There seams to be an odd attitude to the local Jeep Specilists that i dont like, they seam to think that what they are selling is some sort of elitest product!

Watch this space maybee a new line in the Wavey Built product line Laughing

Woody...He got me some more KCs and some spiffy covers for them, along with the windshield bracket thingies to mount them to the bottom corners of the windshield - WOO HOO!!!!!!! Dancing

Mims

sounds great, hope to see the now brighter lit Yellow Peril in action locally sometime soon.

Wavey

Mark is not always the greatest of salesman, but his quality of work is good, he has built up a comprehensive knowledge of Jeeps and modifying them, and he can be very helpful. 2 occasions spring to mind.

1st my TJ was recovered to his shop at 1700 on a saturday evening after I had blown the rear diff at Slindon. After washing the Jeep I finally left at 2100. When I returned at 0900 on the Sunday he had already finished welding the diff casing. I drove the Jeep out of his shop that Sunday afternoon.

2ndly he opened his shop at 2300 on a Friday evening to take in my XJ, rather than have it left on the street, after the water pump exploded on the A31 at Picket Post.

How many places will treat their customers like that.

Woody...Mark actually sent Wavey a reply email offering help, etc if he could be more specific about what he wanted. It didn't answer the question asked but was at least friendly and open.

The problem was the other main southern company, surprisingly!

The problem Wavey seems to be encountering is that rather than advise according to the specifics volunteered, the companies want him to take the Jeep in to them to look at before they will quote a price on anything.

He emailed one certain place (not Mark) for prices of specific lift kits and was not given any. Instead, he was told to take the Jeep in for the gentleman concerned to ascertain which would be the best system.
This sadly does not take into account the fact that we were looking for a specific kit, or that Wavey is a 4x4 mechanic and does actually know a little bit about lifting the darn things!

Woody to start off with we are after a mild lift.I asked for a 2" spring ,shox and Brake line combo.

I asume a Wrangler can handle this with out drive line mods. Will be poping it on the two poster in the new year just to check what we can do with it.

A certain 'specilist' wouldnt let me know how much his kits cost untill id poped into his place for a chat to see if i was after the correct instlation for my car.He also wasnt forthcoming as to weather he would sell me parts with out fitting them. Not good realy. So i wont be going there his attitude was a little elitest to say the least, and no it wasnt Mark.

Will be poping down to see Mark in due course to see what he has to offer, but i think we might be seeing a few Wavey Built bits and bobs for the Wrangler.Got to be honnest there realy isnt much about that i could find in this country, for a car that is sold here thats not good there has to be a gap in the market.

I seam to remember zooks having a simular problem here 10-15 years ago when i started out in 4x4's.

Woody...eventually, I'm hoping to go for a 6inch long arm suspension lift with 35s on it (regeared and lockered up, of course!)

At the moment, because of the warranty, I need to settle for a 2inch lift just to get my belly off the ground. Trying to work out whether the Jeep will cope with a set of 33s or whether to stick with 31s for now though.

Any ideas???

Wavey

tell me about it I keep looking at all the Jeep bits available on the US websites and drooling. Most bits have to be imported and it is the shipping that kills Sad

If it is an interim step to an eventual big lift then you could try a 2" Body Lift and 2" suspension lift which would enable bigger tyres (33s should fit but would need 4.56 gearing in the diffs) without any driveline or steering mods. You should be able to run up to 31s already with only a slight drop in performance - http://www.jeepclub.co.uk/faqs.cfm?id=2 The 2" Body Lift makes cleaning the underside so much easier Very Happy

The driveline problems seem to start at about 2.5" of suspension lift, although this appears to vary between individual Jeeps a bit. Certainly once you pass the 3" mark it all gets a bit more expensive with SYE, Short Shaft Conversion, Steering mods, etc.

Not too sure about body lifts but yes the suspension lift will be a temp messure at about 2" i suspect.Need to get on 2 post ramp and see what the suspension dose with full droop etc.

I suspect i can get what we need with out a body lift but need to have a good look first.Still think it might wind up with a home brew system as im not over impressed with the local talant.

After driving Custard on 30" rubber it feels that it will cope with 33" on the existing gearing. At the moment it briskly pulls away in second gear with no labouring. In fact in second its still almost too low ! Also has a nice big 4 litre lump surley it can cope with 33".On 30" rubber its still faster up to 60 than a 3.9v8 disco.

Is the 6 speed box lower geared in 1st than the 5speed.Whats the final drive ratio been hunting but know has it listed ! (cant be ***** to go outside to the car and get the book) Also thinking canging the gearing in the T box and then do the diffs later when the tyres get bigger and teh lockers go in.

woody is correct, that is if the lift remains less than 2" inch it does not require much drive line modifications......31" tyres are also good 33" tyres with a 1" body lift is possible (i personally don't like any more body lift than 1" as i have seen the damage that can happen) as for the 6gear manual box i believe the advantage is 3rd and 4th you must get the r&p correct before you start to change the transfer box.
i have a heavily modified wrangler and have no warranty issues with the parts that have remand factory...........but the upgrade part's are obviously not covered.

Wavey

I bought my TJ with 33s already fitted but with stock gearing and on the drive home the slightest hill on a motorway and I was down to 4th gear, it also burnt a whole lot more fuel Shocked Offroad descents were scary requiring brake dabbing. Once I had the diffs regeared the onroad performance was back to stock and offroad was a lot better. I now do some of the shallower/shorted descents in 2nd gear as 1st can be very slow Very Happy

I know nowt about the 6 speed box though you may find more info on some of the US websites, not many people over here have them.

Thanks guys.

I can say the gearing on teh 6 speed is very low in 1st.

On the 30" tyres ( i understand it came with 28" rubber )we have at the moment is way lower in 1st than any LR product (its all i realy have as a comparision). It pulls away in second sharper than stock defenders can in 1st.Also the engine has some mental grunt so holding speed isnt a problem at the moment.

With the higher gearing higher kerb weights and lower power outputs of the Land Rovers we are ok with using 32 or 33" tyres with out to much trouble.I ran 34" on the disco for a while with stock gearing.I find it hard to understand why a car with gearing and lighter kerb weight struggles?

Think im going to experiment like i have done with every thing iin the past,Gearing is going to be an issue im sure as we would like an effecnt off road machine, but for the time being its road use we need it for mainly.Dose any one know what the final drive ratio's are for the 4.0 6 speed as im having trouble getting the info i want ?

Gotta say in impressed with the Wrangler for the money paid and cant wait to see it mix it with the mud soon.Cant wait to see the LWB diesal Wrangler in the flesh as that looks like the sort of thing im after as long as it can handle the payload.
