|
|
|
Hi,
I've done a search and can't find anything on this so at risk of being flamed for asking something again here we go :-
I have a 2.5 DI Transit engine and I'm considering putting it into my very tired and uneconomical series 2A. Has anyone done this and if so are there any pitfalls that I should consider. A conversion kit is about £250 and as I already have the engine that ( in theory ) is all it would cost me.
Do I have to notify DVLA of an engine change and if so will it have any impact on the tax exemption of the vehicle, all other parts - gearbox / axles etc are original.
Thanking anyone in anticipation ( even if it's for a flaming !!)
Brian

I've got one in my series 3 I didn't do the conversion my self though, I'm still sorting out the bodges of the people who did.
You need to tell the DVLA AND your insurance company, but you'll keep your tax exemption, my series 3 has.
Make sure you buy the full kit, they're made about 3 miles from here, including the bush that replaces the spigot bearing in teh crank of the tranny engine. The people who fitted mine hadn't done this and it ended up eating gearboxes and finally the clutch, a couple of weeks ago, got it sorted now though.
You'll need to fab up a way of joining the exhause systems together, find somewhere else to put the battery, mine's under the passenger seat now, and sort out a temperature gauge.
They are VERY noisey so whilst the engine is out clean up your bulkead and stick sound proofing to both sides.
they pull like a train and seem a well suited engine for that size of vehicle, I've had no problems with some fairly deep wading either, it just keeps going and doesn't drip oil everywhere like a landy engine.
HTH
Chris

Hi l did this conversion over 20+ years ago but used the old YORK engine
Hell of ajob to start from cold .
l made the adapter plate myself the SWB was 1965 2a the gearbox was from a 6 cylinder109 , l had to turn the engine 10 degrees to miss the front prop , For the bearing in the crank l turned up a phosphour bronze bush, Made engine brackets + used transit engine mounting rubbersfixed to angle brackets , lined it up till it looked right + welded to original mountings
Home built exhaust , S3 Oil filled Air can ,NEW radiator , mixture of hoses,
lt had a Fairy O/D , Offset wheels from a BMC bread van [popular conversion with the centers turned out]
Took 3 weeks to do , fired up 1st time, 2days later myself, wife + 3 kids drove it to Spain ,24 hours non stop [Apart from ferry] never missed a beat despite 185 thousand miles already covered in the transit
l used it every day for 10 years and was up to 7 years ago used as a runaround on the farm ,l still have it though rusted, with the engine still fitted [Another project if l live long enough ].,
l can RECOMEND the conversion as the 2.5 di is a much better engine
l ran the engine on DELVAC oil changed every 6 thou ....... On reading back lm sorry if a bit long but brought back Happy Memories THANKS ...GAWXO...

Hi,
Does your V5 show engine details? Some do, some don't. Don't tell DVLA anything they don't need to know. But you should record the type of fuel, and tell your insurers.
I think there are different power oututs for different MAMs, but all from the same basic engine. Get a brochure/spec sheet from your Ford main dealer.

Hi,
For what it's worth, the previous owner put a York in my S2 and it starts from cold on the button.
When I got it there was no exhuast so I've fitted a LR exhaust system (£30 I think) but cut it off at the front section. Then I cut off the transit down pipe near the top and mated the two with a bit of flexi exhaust pipe from Bosal. There's a bit of a big 'U-bend' where the flexi pipe's being used as it's only so flexible. This is because it's following the path that the original LR front section does under the front cross member. The original pipe is farly flush to the chassis whereas mine isn't. I plan to sort it out though - maybe by rerouting the flexi section.

Forgot to ask,
Anyone recommend anywhere I can buy a conversion kit from ?
Only found 1 place on the web at the moment and they seem a little expensive.
Thanks again

Mine uses the transit flywheel and pressure plate and a landy clutch plate with a special spigot bush.
as for where to buy, talk to Andy at Conversion and Precision Engineering 01246 855520 he makes the kits so should be a good bet and you should be able to talk to him about how to do it.
The only place I found on teh net was Motor and Diesel engineering in Sleaford 01526 830185, they put me on to Andy who recently made up a spigot bush for me.

Hi,
Steve Parker used to list conversion kits. In fact he still does, its just that I can't navigate to that area of his web-site.
http://www.steve-parker.co.uk/
Last time I managed to visit his site, I believe he said that the following 2.5NA diesel engines all had the same basic origines.
DAF LDV400, Transit, Granada, Peugeot 505, but they all needed the LDV sump.
I have seen conversion plates for Perkins to Landy sell on Ebay for £20....but I don't know which Perkins. Log onto Ebay Autos then search for PERKINS. Might even be worth searching for PRIMA.

Thanks for the info guys,
kit has been bought and engine fitted however I am having a problem sourcing cooling hoses, does anyone know what fits or where I can get flexible cooling hoses from ? ( I am talking about hoses to mate the transit engine to the landrover radiator)
As usual from me any advice gratefully received.

Go to your local breakers and also consider using straight lenghts of alloy or stainless tubing and cutting bends from existing hoses, you can then adjust them easily to suit the angles necessary, you may need to form/swage a rib in them to stop them blowing apart.
i'm sort of doing a perkins prima diesel conversion on my s3 off roader so iv'e got it all to come yet.
