Carb or injected engine? Mechanical or electric petrol pump? How old is the petrol in the tank? (it goes off!)
cheers, Ross K

Dunno, does this carb have needles??
If the tank's been in and out, you may have disturbed crud which could have ended up anywhere - filter, pump, carb. You may disturbed wires to the pump if its back there. You may have crushed or kinked a petrol pipe.
If its not been run on petrol for a long time, only on LPG, then there may be internal carb parts seized (like the needle if it has one) or internal leaks due to gaskets or rubbers drying out and being baked.
good luck !

Try a new fuel pump.
Has it got a new fuel filter?

I don't think anyone said it was crap in the tank ; the tank and the attached pipework have been disturbed, crap from before you cleaned it out could have ended up further along the pipe from the tank. I'm sure you would have plugged the pipes to stop bugs crawling up etc. while the tank was out, but there could have been layers of sludge in the pipe that's now flaked off, and so on.
Air leaking in, possibly; in addition to all the other suggestions so far. Has it got a fuel filter? Now's a good time to renew it after cleaning the tank
cheers, Ross K

I don't know, its difficult to be sure what's going on from here!! You seem to be grabbing at each new possibility as 'the answer' without actually investigating - what have you done so far? I would say go ahead and renew the filter for sure, after the tank work
Another suggestion - if the problem comes up only after a while it could be blocked breather causing vacuum in tank.
Can you expand on an earlier comment - "it seems like the petrol is dropping back to the tank as when i change over it has to pump though the pipes" What actually happens there?
umm, is this car new to you, has it ever worked on petrol?
cheers, Ross K
