Hi all you boffins (grovell, grovell), help!!! I have lpg fitted to my disco and it is on the whole very good, except that the gas tanks are not big enough for me when I go off to Scotland (not many lpg stations north of Inverness) also because the gas tanks are in place of the fuel tank, I only get around 20L of petrol in the new smaller tank, which is not far towing 2tons of caravan(also 10mpg on petrol when towing is not funny).
Is it possable to fit an 80L gas tank in the boot as a temporary long distance tank in addition to the existing, that could be put in and out depending upon need for rear boot space? or does anyone have any other sugestions. Thanks.

80l tank in the boot with a max fill of about 64 litres will see you about another 120miles at 10mpg?

100 litre tank better?

I don't know how you would make it easily removable, would need a new valve in the main tank to support twin outlets? Also your insurance company would need a new cert for the system and it would have to be tied down really well too....

You could carry bottled gas and a pump and pump it in, (As long as you pay the road duty on it!)

Where would I get such a pump? and if I were to use it I would of course pay the duty on it. I was also told that for off road you can use a bottle strapped in the back! ( a bit like a forklift has) where would the conectors for that be found?

People have done this kind of thing, though it's doubtful that its within any accepted guidelines. Which is another way of saying no LPG installer will do it for you!

Forklift bottles, unlike ordinary gas cylinders, have a liquid takeoff; so the principle is viable. However it'd be 'unapproved' (not to mention stupid) to have any kind of gas line coupling inside the vehicle. Permanently fitted interior tanks have a kind of double-skinning enclosing all potential leak areas, it's be difficult to make anything similar for a forklift style bottle and coupling.

LPG hand and electric pumps can be found on eBay or various autogas and boat equipment distributors. Forklift bottle couplings can be had from ... forklift spares suppliers Rolling Eyes

You don't say what sort of Disco this is, but earlier ones can also have (permanent) tanks under each sill to add another 55L or so capacity. It might also be worth looking at sacrificing one dicky seat to add a permanent interior cylinder fitted lengthways on one side of the boot, or an upright toroid (donut) for 55-65L. Depends what compromises you can accept, if you go width-ways behind the seat the tank can be bigger still.

cheers, Ross K
