Paul,
For off-road use only, I'd agree with Simon - do it!

I drove a Ford Falcon ute on road (and off) for nearly ten years with a cig locker. After the first few days getting used to it, I had no issues whatsoever.
Also had a cig locker on two LJ50s

it's all a case of relativity....

relatively speaking a falcon is huge compared to a niva. the drivetrain is also huge compared to a niva.

percentage wise though I would guess the niva is as strong as a falcon, but with less power Wink

Falcon - 1780 kg, 4.1 litre 6cyl

Niva - 1200 kg (?) 1.6 litre 4 cyl

seems to me the niva diff has a better chance!

We'll find out on the 14th/15th of this month how well it works! There's a meeting of the Niva Owners Club near Kidderminster, and Paul will be there with his pickup. Knowing him, it should be an interesting time! Very Happy
I've not seen the vehicle in real life, and I'm looking forward to doing so.

I remember reading some years ago that some rally drivers filled the centre of the diffs with lead rather than welding it as it supposedly allowed for a bit of "give".

"you idiot"

very grown up Rolling Eyes

And just to go back to the original rather than b!tching at each other. this is an experiment for paul. the vehicle is off road only and he doesn't rev the nuts off it (it's a diesel so no need to). if it DOES brake he has / has access to many spares. people do it on sj's and swear by it, no-one on here has done it in a niva. I'm fitting a 2.9 v6 into my niva...

Many (lesser informed) people will say it's too big, will explode diffs and wipe out three continents in the process but unless it's done who knows?

forums in general tend to have

1. a lot of people with big opinions whether they be based on fact or not
2. a list of "approved" mods that have been done to death and nobody thinks outside the box. OK paul isn't exactly pioneering new technology but just because it's different and a little bit risky should people REALLY be slagging him off or putting him down?

Sensible debate on the life of welded diffs is welcome - especially if you've experiance of a Lada with one.

Name calling, insults, etc is not welcome. There's plenty other car forums for people to slag each other off.

... just so's we know from whence comes the voice of knowledge and experience matey

I have already stated my experience with cig lockers, and as far as I can tell you are simply passing on hearsay ... a mate of somebody you spoke to once heard that someone who's mate had a cig locker in a niva went and broke it whilst doing donuts in a supermarket carpark so therefore niva diffs will automatically break an axle as soon as you weld them.

This almost matches the legend that Niva front wheel bearings will automatically fly apart if Suzuki wheels are fitted.

I too was told that the suzuki LJ50 would break stuff if I welded the diff. I did it anyway and nothing broke.
I was also told that welding the Borg Warner diff in my Ford would cause all kinds of hassle, but I did it and drove it on and off road for over 200 thousand kilometres in nearly ten years.

I may not know a huge amount about Niva's, still only a newby in relation to them, but from what I've found so far, it takes an awful lot to kill one of these, and honestly, if the Diff has been welded properly, then I can't see a problem, for starters, the standard engine would not have enough power to snap the diff (unless your doing something you should definitely NOT be doing).

spring to mind. as gadgetboy has said this is a friendly section, and this arguing has even driven the original poster out of his own thread. I'm contacting the admin to lock this thread down as it's turning into something we're not!!
