Hi Chris
Things you should check before panicking about a CV. Take your front propshaft off (We sell a nice prop bolt removal tool in the shop that makes it an easy job) and check the UJs and slip joint for free play, there should be very little.
Next, before refitting the prop, go for a drive in 4wd and see of the noise is still there. If it is then the problem probably lies with the transfer box.
The C3s don;t have free wheeling hubs so even in 2wd the front axle internals are being turned, its just that they're not being driven by the engine.
I assume you are not in 4wd on a hard surface. The C3s don;t ahve central diffs so if you are on a hard surface you will get transmission wind up and the wheels will skip and you may break something.

With the front prop removed the axle is not being driven. If you are not getting any knocking I'd suspect the prop. Look for loose UJs and/or slip joint. Taking it to a specialist is the best way to identify problems.
Props are about £150 each, CVs are a LOT more.
