Subject: Possible case of Profiteering and Cartel practices

Dear sirs,

In this time of higher green awareness can I point you in the direction of Vegetable Oil sold by the big supermarkets - ie Tesco and Sainsburys who match their practices.

I, like many others, run my vehicle on Vegetable Oil as it is greener than diesel, being based on Oil Seed Rape it also supports our farmers without causing issues in tropical countries.

Last week when I collected my standing order from my local Sainsburys I noticed that they had matched their prices to Tescos and raised the cost for a 3 litre bottle from £2.21 to £2.98 which is a 33% rise.

A rise of this much is far from being a fair price rise, and both supermarket chains appear to raise the price in unfairly big chunks every few months.

I would welcome your views on this.

Regards

Welcome to Difflock
I totally agree with you.

The supermarkets are DEFINATELY price fixing veg oil.

all the evidence you need is here

end the day its not really worth running on veg if you dont do the mileage, i am lucky in that i have a second vehicle, a 55plate astra diesel, i will use that more now and cut the costs of my motoring, if we all stopped buying new veg then the supermarkets plus the makers would soon be left with a glut of unsold on thier hands, pure greed has done this, and its greed by them, by not purchasing it you can force the price down

It's called supply and demand.
You can't really blame the supermarkets, if you had a warehouse full of veg oil you'd want to get the best price possible wouldn't you?

It was just a matter of time before they realised that we use it as fuel, I mean, I didn't expect them to think that I was going to fry chips with the 30ltrs in my trolley every other week.

99p/ltr in our Asda this week. Sad

I had been getting some used from local Chinese, but even he's got wise now cos someone offered to buy it off him.

hence stop using it for a couple of weeks and all of a sudden the supply is warehouses full of the stuff they cant sell, suddenly greed is overcome by panic, while you only saving around 16p per ltr the savings are little, i use around 3 gallons a week total fuel, used to get 6 ltrs every time i went to asda, with the occasional 30 or 60 ltrs when i was going to be doing any mileage,so when you work out what you are now saving, then add into the equation the cost of the extra fuel filters and engine oil changes you do when using veg the saving is even less than you imagine, especially if you are using quality lube oil in your motor, add into that any cetane booster or injector cleaner you may be adding as well and the figures come down to a few pence per ltr savings, general apathy in this country has allowed the government to hike up fuel costs at a whim whenever they want, make a stand on veg and you will win this battle, end the day customs could not handle the lower quantity users, hence the 2500 ltr rule came into being

Well they cannot sell it anymore in my local Tesco and Asda at £2.98/3l. They have so much stock now the shelves are overflowing at that price.

A few weeks ago @ £2.21 they were always having to re-stock the shelves Rolling Eyes

Now switched to Tesco's Pura and placing an order with Tesco Direct for 40 litres every 2 weeks (56p/l at the moment) Smile

I wish I could get away with 40l a fortnight!

Depends on how often I drive to work!

Some weeks I use 20l but if I tow something to scotland we use about 100l for a trip Laughing

22mpg makes it sup the veg...

Well it only goes into the better half's Terrano 50/50 with dino for her run to and from work so a 20l SPAM is always welcome. She won't let me go out and fill her 80l tank up with dino but somehow SVO is OK Rolling Eyes Just buying in that small amount for now but if it goes well I may up it next time. Just have to hope they deliver the oil I have selected and don't supply a double the price alternative which they will have to haul back.

For running around locally we have a Piggy 106 1.4 diesel with a mildly leaky HG. Not losing water and has a Lucas FIP. So don't use more than maybe 15% SVO in that and the fuel gauge never ceases to drop anyway Surprised Just sounds like puffing billy when I pull up after a run LOL

Yep. You beat me to it. Just logged into Tesco to update my order and the price has gone up by almost 100% (£1.07/l)!!

Now that p155es me off as the order was confirmed for delivery at a fixed price. But I guess in the small print they can change the prices to whatever they fancy! Sad

From Tesco's order confirmation email -

'The guide price is what we estimate your order will come to when we do your shopping. You may find that your final bill is slightly different from the guide price.

If the final price charged for any item is more than you wanted to pay, you can return it and we?ll give you a full refund. Just give it back to the driver and we?ll take care of it for you.'

And from their pricing policy -

'The guide price is based on the prices in-store today. But what you pay is the price in-store on the day of delivery and some prices may have changed.'

Evil or Very Mad

So anyone have an alternative economical source outside of the 'Cartel' ?

Paul

Thats ******* ridiculous.

One of my local tesco's had some Pura in last week, 56 or 58 ppl, 18 bottles on the shelf so I bought them all.

I placed an order for 30 litres of Pura on friday, at the same price, and yep, by today price has doubled!

Are that many people running SVO that the price has been driven up so uch, is it price fixing, or is there are supply problem?

I've even tried going direct to the wholesalers for a supply, I had this back from KTC

Good Afternoon Mr Macfarlane,

Firstly I would like to thank you for enquirying about KTC'S products.

Our minimum drop is 2 pallets which can be of one product or mixed products, please find enclosed information as requested.

KTC SUNFLOWER OIL 1X15LTR £19.04 56 DRUMS PER PALLET

KTC CORN OIL 15LTR £20.04 56 DRUMS PER PALLET

KTC RAPESEED OIL 20LTR £18.81 42 DRUMS PER PALLET

At the moment the prices are quite high due to the market, the prices can fluctuate daily or weekly, which at the moment they are daily, so its always best to double check the prices before ordering.

Our delivery times are 7 - 10 working days

As we have not dealt with you previously the account would be on a proforma basis until credit is applicable, which means the payment needs to be sent and cleared before goods are despatched to yourselves.

I must make you aware that KTC does not deliver to private houses, only companies.

Please do not hesitate to contact me by email or by telephone on 0121 505 9200, if you have any further questions or queries.

Best Regards

Donna

so basically rapeseed is the cheapest at 94ppl and I would have to buy about £1500.00 worth to get that price!

again guys the cure is in your hands, if you dont use veg for a couple of weeks they are going to go into a blind panic, supermarkets rely on fast turnover products not something sitting there gathering dust, `the price is up because of the market` yeah load of ******, its up because greedy shites have seen a get rick quick scheme, , ok if the crop is bad then prices will rise, we can appreciate that, however this is not fully the case, yes it will cost you a bit more to run your vehicles for a month or so BUT the price of veg will drop sharply if you boycott it totally, in reality what is .19p per ltr more if you use dino, just on two quid for 10 ltrs, cut back on your miles and it wont be that bad, dont do any unnecessary miles, at the end of the day i would say that we that use veg in our vehicles are the main users of veg now, so it is we who have the power to make or break this latest scam that is raping our wallets, i since the price hike have not purchased any veg, my local asda that was always low stocked on veg now has shelves full of the stuff, so not only is it me saying stuff it but others obviously are locally, wont take long for someone to realise that alls not right

Nope, Corn oil seems to run fine, never used it myself tho.

Soya is the oil to avoid really, however I've not seen any ill effects.

Cheers Nat.

Well we have just finished our 45l of Soya and move to the Corn oil for the next week or so Wink

Tesco last night had their shelves stuffed with Sunflower and Rape @ £2.98/3l. as Treeboa mentioned above, that stuff isn't moving at that price. For the 10p/l saving it isn't worth it when you cost in filter changes and hassle factor.

Well Tesco's direct have lost a customer Shocked Local delivery guy was an arris anyway Wink

I popped into Makro today to check out the price of oil. KTC veg oil in a 20ltr drum worked out to 93p a litre. The same oil in a box of 6x1 litre bottles worked out to 78p a litre and that is the cheapest oil they have. So i brought a few boxes while ii was there as its 99p a litre in Tesco Very Happy
