inspired by the bloke wit no use in his legs, sorry to be blunt chap and i'm sorry but cant remember ya name!!
well not as bad as it sounds, basically i've got phocomelia. just means my arms finish at the elbow, dont bend an only have 3 digits in total. you may think i'm jokin but i'm serious - i know how much you guys like pictures but i'm not postin any haha!!
but hey i'm not looking for sympathy, i'm 26, grown up with it and cope well! change my own engines and stuff, fitted sammy axles to my spoa'd 410etc - not lookin for praise either!! i'm 6'6" so as you can imagin i need the seat right back in my sj but need to lean forwad for the steerin and gears!! (back ache at the end of a long off road session!!
one reason i've 'come clean' is that if i ever meet any of ya i dont want ya to be shocked if ya ever see me about, or feel awkward!!!
other reason, sj's are all 'twist' controls, ie lights, wipers. and obviusly i need both hands to twist the controls!! going thru a huge puddle off road and then the screen gettin covered and not being able to put the wipers on till i stop is an ****!!
anyone got a wiring diagram, self drawn if need be, of how to change these to switches??? - hence the earlier 'wheres your switches' post!!
blimey, that was long winded but its all of my chest!!! wow.
dave

check out the online manual here, it has wiring diagrams http://www.4x4.in.th/manual_sj413
Probably the easiest way to do it would be to splice into the wires where the come into the big connector under the steering column.

cynic-al you say to splice into the wires?? would that mean i would have normal controls and my extra switch controls too?? would be quite cool.

yes you could do that if you wanted. Or you could cut them there and have just your new switches, depends what you want!

just an idea mate but you could fit 'nitrous' type push and hold type switches to the steering wheel ( also like a f1 car) so there thumb operated, one for wipers (push and it wipes once sort of thing, ill be doing some thing similar on the gear stick for off road use), an other on the other side to flash the headlights, and another on each side to do the indicators. i think demon tweeks sell f1 style steering wheels. would probably take a bit of professional help to sort it out but it would help...i think

that sounds great!! the indicators not a prob, or full to dip, just the twisty bits. in all honesty prob just the wipers!! that moment of blindness going thru a ****#y pubble without ya wipers is scary stuff!!
you've give me an idea of a push button on the floor. lot like the mk1 fiesta although that was a pump for washer jets, same principal!!
only thing, sj's aren't watertight at the best of times a switch on the floor would have to be waterproof!!
also, had one of those steerin wheels you on about in an old cav turbo i had, buttons just live the horn!! good idea tho!!

This is the diagram for the 3 speed model. Complicated switching as when you switch the wipers off they self park. Hope this diagram helps.

that does actually sorta help chap!! basically, puttin it dumbly (is that a word??) for myself, if i cut into, and live to a switch the low speed, in theory when i flick a switch it would switch on??
that is the least technical thing i think i have ever said!!!

yes but i don't know what will happen if you have one switch on low speed and one on fast speed all at the same time

im gonna wire a 2 poll toggle switch to the gear lever that goes straight to the wiper motor and washer jets, pull up/hold for wiper only, push down/hold for wiper and washers. you could wire the wiper motor to the horn and put a separate switch somewhere else for the horn, that way you don't have to mess about to much with the boss area as the contacts are already in place

if it's just the wipers you are interested in could you not do something with putting a Vitara steering wheel on and using the horn button in the middle to make them do 1 sweep of the screen?
I will have a look over the weekend if I have time and see if I can work out the cables you would need to splice into.

i dont see why not youll need to isloate which wires to splice the horn button to via your wiring diagram

if its the twisting thats the problem, could a set of spanish stalks be fitted? because they just push down as a pose to having to turn them like you do on the jap ones. just a thaught....

was that me then?
glad to see somebody else out there playing in the mud regardless! I've found the off roading comunity to be amongst the most un-discriminative of them all. People will just let you get on with it rather than trying to wrap you up in cotton wool all the time which is a welcome releif!! The niva boys have even been known to hide my wheelchair when I've been off in the car

Just looking at the wiring diagram for the wiper motor, i'm guessing the 410 doesn't have a clever wash/wipe combo on a switch?

just another thought... you could modify the steering wheel or entire column to move it closer to you? might save the back ache.

Took the words out my mouth Mike.
Dave, I'm sure you'll about the guy who adapt cars for motability and the like, but it should be pretty easy to extend your column by the 15"-18" you need by adding the extra at the UJ.
Mind you it'd make it a swine to steal

It'd make it a swine to get into as well. I could come up with a really cool push button system but it'd never be waterproof. not good. Hmm.
I think buttons on the steering wheel are the way forward.
