Ha, best for what I hear you say?
But at least I got you to read this far.

My question really is what common plant oil is best the best for use as fuel?
Is it soya, rape, sunflower, palm or some other?
Which has the lowest viscosity?
Which has the highest cetane rating (I know it is not directly comparable with diesel)?
Which produces least smoke?
Which is least prone to polymerisation?

Personal experience (that's you Nat Wink )
or links to other sources would be most appreciated.

Vegetableoildiesel forum is a good source as always.

Generally

Sunflower oil is considered good, one of the less viscous oils and doesn't gel till minus 16*c. However it is quite expensive.
I know somebody who gets 60mpg from his pug on other oils but sunflower oil returns 70mpg.

Next is pure rapeseed, thisis what the germans use and it does run very clean as with sunflower, readily available off farm.

These 2 above are usually the best oils to use.

Also available is Soya, which is the cheapest (in the KTC boxes) This is not the best for engines as it is very bad for carbon deposits and can polymerise in your injectors at the temperatures they run at,
I use the KTC boxes, but my fourtrak is IDI with Pintle injectors so is a bit more tolerant of it.

Palm oil, this is generally quite thick, can be very gloopy after use, beware a lot of is now grown on Rainforest sites that has been subject to slash and burn.

And the rest of the oils will work but are usually too expensive to be viable.
Olive oil and evening primrose work, as would most oils really.

Engine oil, hydraulic oil and kerosene and paraffin all work in a diesel (but these are either nasty or illegal to do)

Animal fats are allowed under the 2500l rule,
Can be difficult to use due to them being solid at room temps.
But setup a heated tank and a heated filter rig and it has been done...

Thanks Nat,
I have purchased 250l of rapeseed oil so it is good to hear it is one of the better options. I want to install a heater so I can use a higher proportion than the 10-12% I'm using now. I guess in the end I might have to go twin tank.

I appreciate what you say about the "slash and burn" status of palm oil. I originally chose to by rape oil becasue it was produced relatively locally but I don't think any source is perfect. If the land is used as a fuel crop then the food it was producing before has to come from somewhere.
