Err, no.

'fraid not. At least, you couldn't a few years ago when I was running an LPG vehicle.

I think the reason is, that although it can run on LPG, it doesn't have to, so, no rebate.. Grrr...

Also it depends on how old the car is.....I tried this last year.....the car has to be registered after March '06.....if this isn't the biggest con of the road tax system then hey..........nothing to do with emissions etc......as they would charge less tax on ALL so called 'greener' vehicles (I HATE that term) not just nearly brand spankers, that a very few elite can afford.......I think also that the conversion has to be done by a gov. recognised and approved conversion company......I think!!!!......... There is a list floating 'round here some where.....

The association with LPG being a greener fuel is tenuous to say the least. The original tax advantage was to encourage the cleaner burning properties of the fuel, when there was a danger of smog, but modern engines and catalytic converters have dramatically improved all engines, making the LPG advantage minimal.

The big issue today is CO2 emissions. I have posted before that I feel the tax advantage of LPG will be removed in due course and the reason is that for an equivalent power output LPG has a worse CO2 emission than diesel. LPG is a fossil fuel.

Well, my road tax was lower on a 1993 Cherokee running an LPG setup than a standard cherokee. Possibly the car has to be registered as using LPG on the V5. Declaring it as the primary fuel may be the way to get your reduced tax.

Ask the DVLA for how to go about it, rather than listening to the somewhat confused advice being given around here - no offence to anyone, but it's time to get it from the horse's mouth. Too many conflicting opinions are being posted without anyone appearing to know the whole story.

Here's the deal ;

For cars registered BEFORE March 2001, there is NO reduction in Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax disc). You must still get your registration document updated because you have changed fuel type! There may be other advantages, like free parking in some cities, like Sheffield. We don't know how non-London congestion charges might work, but there could well be benefits there one day.

For cars registered after March 2001 and originally supplied as petrol only, and later converted to LPG; There is a small reduction in VED £15-20 or so, depends on the car band. You need to update the registration as 'Alternative Fuel Vehicle' and the DVLA will want written proof - like an LPGA certificate.

This has absolutely nothing to with the 'Powershift List' of type-approved conversion combinations - that is meaningful if we talk about London Congestion charge though!!

For cars registered after March 2001 with 'factory fitted' LPG, they will have been registered as 'Alternative Fuel' from new so there's no more to be had.

Yup, it is all on the DVLA website but its quite well hidden and not all in one place.

So for most of us here there is no car tax to be saved, but you ARE still required to tell DVLA anyway.

cheers, Ross K

Cheers for clearing that up

My mate has a 2003 JEEP Cherokee - 3.7V6.

He took his installation cert to the DVLA, and as you rightly say, they have changed the fuel type to LPG and I think he says he gets £20 off.

Better than nothing I suppose. I bet that;s a free tank of gas a year then !
