Hello to all of you Moggers out there, and thanks to Shaggy for making me aware of, and inviting me to join this forum. (Its me Muddymog from ebay). If I've got this thing to work then I should have posted some pics of my Mog, I know that it does not resemble a 404, but chassis, axles, torque tubes, gearbox are all present and correct. Its just the bodywork? and engine that are different (I bought it without cab or engine). If you are a real Unimog purist then look away. I've owned it for about 6 years and worked on ot on and off during that time. At the moment the enthusiasm is back on and I am undergoing a disc brake conversion. Seems to be working out OK, I'll keep you posted. Its been to Bures a couple of times, Lydd, Canewdon and Devils Pitt, as well as to Romford once to move some rocks. (there good at that aren't they Shaggy). The Engine is a carbed 3.5 Range Rover V8, along with bellhousing, clutch, release mech, pedalbox etc. I made an adaptor plate between Mog box and bellhousing, then 'cut and shut' the gearbox input shaft so it is half Mog and half RR. I've given the drive train a 'damned good thrashing' and nothings broken ---- yet.
I intend to come to Mogstock in May, and meet up with you guys. Can't wait.

Satch.

With the width of your Mog i mean not mud!!

Hi Stuvy,
Didn't get stuck at Devils Pitt because of width, mainly because there is no bodywork to damage on the Ratmog so I just tend to force my way through most situations. Got through the mud hole but couldn't claw my way up the slope to get out, and had to get a tow.

Satch.

Oh the joys of home made 'A' frame cranes - I built this for the hovercraft;

If I'd realised you done that to a 404, I probably wouldn't have invited you Smile Only joking, look forward to meeting you at mogstock, and that is a very crazy device. You seen mad max Smile

EDIT - added to please the pedants below.

Hi V8Ratmog,

Welcome, thats a really nice approach to converting a rusty 404. Been thinking along similar lines myself with my rusty 404's. When are you next going to Bures? I marshall there so would be good to say Hi......

Do you have any pic's of your V8 conversion?....I see you have a gas bottle in there, how long does that last?

Cheers

Steveb

Hi, The XL's are OK, but the lack of an aggresive shoulder means that they are not great at getting out of slippery ruts. Because of the disc brake conversion (which widens the track) I've recently bought some U900 rims that came with 14.50x20 Dunlop MPT's, they have a much more aggresive pattern, and I am expecting a great improvement. I'll probably have to slice chunks out of the footwells though to clear on full lock full articulation. The XL's on 404 rims will probably be put up for sale on this forum. Be patient.

Hi Dan, I'm making my own disc conversion, using Range Rover discs and four pot callipers all round, reversing the hubs, etc etc. I've modified the calipers, blanking off one of the inlets, and drilling them internally, so all four pistons work together. I have two master cylinders, front and rear, on a homemade biasing mechanism, which bolts onto a RR servo. When I get the brackets back from the zinc platers I'll endeavour to get some good pictures and post them.

Hi Steveb, Sorry, no photos, I had my slr camera set up on a tripod when I was converting and took lots of pictures. Unfortunatly the film did'nt wind back and when I opened the camera, gloom and doom. I will defo be at Bures as soon as brakes are done. Have you got any dates for me ?
Gas bottle is the petrol tank. It was a quick option at the time when I was getting up and running, and has been on for years now.

Good to meet you Andy at Bures yesterday,
'twas a wet old day , but great fun. The Madmog looked great pootling about in the mud and water

Hopefully Bures will be open again later in the year, under new ownership now, and if they run as well or even close to the way Pete and Kay have they will be doing well so good luck owners and also us who enjoy playtime there......

Cheers

Thanks Steve,
That was one excellent days mud plugging. It was good to meet you and Piggy as well as Piggy's mog mates.
I've been to Bures quite a few times in the past, but this was by far the best day I've had there. My friends and daughter have not stopped talking about the day since. Such a shame theres no event there next month.
That lake was deep in places - I've just drained 7 litres of something resembling condensed chicken soup out of my front axle where 3 litres of EP90 had gone in. Has anyone ever changed the driveshaft oil seals either side of the double uj ????
If there are any other play days coming up in the Essex or Suffolk area please post details.

Cheers. Andy.

Funny you say that - we did that very thing on spares mog (parked indoors for 3 years) to get a front portal off (need to understand the kingpins before doing Ingrids).

When the half shaft went down to the narrow bit it poured nasty emulsified oil and water out - maybe even a litre. I was actually nearly sick!

I've avoided going far into the axles of real mog - but it may be time.

Hi Piggy,
I'm definitely interested in getting MadMog dirty again, I assume its open to all makes of offroader not just the Mighty Mog. It might be worth starting a new topic with the invite as it might get missed at the bottom of this one.
Regards. Andy.
