Just had my Defender 90 MOT'd. It's a 1987 V8 but with a very low mileage and in bob on condition. The original SUs have been replaced with a four barrel edelbrock. I told the mechanic that I was going to fit a diy LPG conversion kit and he said it wasn't worth it. LPG doesn't work well on V8s, poor performance, poor consumption, reduced torque etc etc. I got the impression he had a real downer on LPG. I was going to fit a kit from Tinley Tech. Does anyone have any experience of such a conversion?

There can be one of two small problems to over come but mostly with Efi engines, one thing you should fit is a dual timing ignition amp.

Well, you'll get lots of opinions Smile

I for one wouldn't bother with timing advance gadgets, its just something else to go wrong (seen plenty of broken ones) for barely measurable benefits.

Like ee said, there are thousands out there. Most perform well, and are cheap to run. A few are horrors - bodged or unsuitable installations. Be aware that gas can show up issues - a V8 with cross-firing ignition leads may run rough on petrol but backfire on gas. Bystanders would blame the gas but really the ignition leads are duff. Best results with a good unknackered engine and a tip-tip ignition system.

It's important to get something suitable. In your case the usual LPG gubbins for twin SU or stromberg clearly won't fit. You'll need mixer(s) to suit both the carbs and the engine power output - it has to physically fit and to have the right airflow characteristics. Make very sure your supplier understands what you have or you'll never be happy with the results.

Before you go down any DIY route consult your insurers, I expect you've already done that for the other mods, but for LPG they may require certification.

cheers, Ross K

I would suspect that the Rover V8 is probably THE most converted engine in the world to run on LPG. They are smooth on petrol and even smoother on LPG. I've been running V8's on gas for years and what Rossko says is dead right. Most faults are not with the LPG system but with the ignition which is more critical when on LPG. I have never bothered with an advance module, just advanced the timing to the onset of pinking when on petrol then backed it off a fraction.

The MoT mechanic was talking out of his ****!!!

i converted mine using the tinley tech conversion, took me a couple of days start to finish, very simple to fit and wire, ive noticed no difference in performance etc, and also definatly saving money already! not had mine tuned up yet and its runing nice!

Cynical me thinks the MoT chappie doesn't like LPG 'cos it's less likely to fail the emissions test, and therefore a potential loss of earnings spending 30 mins tweaking the fuel/timing settings and cleaning the air filter etc.....

dont think a 1987 landy would have a emissions test for MOT, i think its only vehicles after 1991 that need emissions tested..?

i certainly wouldnt take any notice of him tho, sounds like he was a bit of an idiot

This site shows the limits of emissions for vehicles first used on or after 1975.

Interestingly, the emissions tests use the standard of either the age of the vehicle or the age of the engine, whichever is older.
eg you buy my 1974 engine and put it in a brand new vehicle, the tests are visual only. (the onus is on you to prove the age of the engine)
Similarly, I buy a brand new 2008 engine and put it in my 1974 LR, it's still only a visual test.
