Anyone running a smartveg twin tank system on the motor ? Thinking of getting one for my 300tdi disco. Now it seems to be a question of splashing out and getting a full kit or save a few bob and put the kit together myself. I do like the automatic side of the smartveg system though. It swaps to veg oil before the temp gauge reaches normal in answer to my earlier question.

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say I've ordered a Smartveg kit. Although I wont make the savings that I would making biodiesel, biodiesel would need need a bit more time plus room with power and running water. Running filtered wvo seems to be the best option for me. I'll keep you informed when delivered and installed which will hopefully be in the next 2-3 weeks.

I look forward to seeing how you get on with the kit as I'm tempted to have this fitted to mine ............ very soon.

where are you planning fitting the 2nd tank.

I'm thinking of twin tank but don't want to loose any boot space.

I was thinking of asking Allard to make one (tank) ..........

Tried to attach a file but it failed. There was an article in Land Rover enthusiast July 2006 re a Defender fitted with this kit and Allard had made a tank especially exiting on the same side of the normal diesel tank but at the rear, I think it was a 35 litre.
If anyone is interested PM me and i'll try and forward it.

Hi all,

Fitted my Smartveg kit last Friday. Found that the lift pump was knackered so had to put a new one on Saturday. Kit fitting was straight forward and the couple of queries I had after initially reading the instructions were very kindly answered by Pope. The only thing in the instructions that could be better is the explanation for what to do with the bleed pipes from the injectors. At the moment they are untouched and its running well on veg (about 80% veg as I didn't empty the tank of diesel) but apparently I do need to blank off the bleed pipe by the pump and "T" it into the main return to the tank. Bleeding the diesel through wasn't to bad with the hand "bulb" pump you have just got got to remember to cover the end when releasing the bulb so it sucks from the tank. The new tank was positioned in place of a dickie seat and lifted on 2 pieces of wood so it cleared the shaped bit of the trim. Running on new oil at the moment as I thought that may be better for the first run and I had fallen behind with filtering. Will be adding filtered waste oil to the tank next week. No fitted a heated fuel filter but keeping my eyes open for one. One local scrappy didn't have one before fitting and I have boycotted "pick up spares". I have fitted a foam jacket from Bio-tuning to the fuel filter as for £1.50 it seemed a good idea. I've worked it out as 3k miles on waste oil will be about £50 short of paying for the kit.

bye,

G.

Thanks for the update ....... sounds as if your well chuffed with the kit and the ease of fitting ? How long did it take you and what sort of knowledge did/do you have ? Would you recommend fitting it yourself ?

Fitting the kit took the best part of 6hrs. Although there were two of use it was more to hold and pass things than to be working on different jobs. The most time consuming part was probably securing the extra tank. Even on your own I think you could do it in just under 5hrs without stopping for lunch and too many cuppas. I have a reasonable mechanical knowledge but most of it is just plumbing so straight forward. I certainly think that its not worth paying for it to be installed unless you have a healthy bank account but in that case you don't mind the cost of diesel. As mentioned before the tank could be put in the back and the fuel line run underneath the car and the valve block mounted one evening then the rest done when time allows.
