Hi all

I am thinking of viewing an Sj locally which is in really good condition (previously registered abroad) and has no rust!

What should I be looking for on it and are there any common problems I should be aware of?

I would be using it as a main car and doing some long trips (Spain etc) is there any reason why (apart from speed... I have a defender so can cope with that) the engine/mechanicals wouldnt be up to such long journeys? How strong are the head gaskets??

Would people recommend a Jimny instead?

Any info would be appreciated,

Many Thanks
James

The SJ is a great little thing but old, noisy, slow with naff headlights. The starters can be iffy and the release bearings on the clutches used to cease on mine all the time. I expect from going swimming then leaving it parked. The carbs and electrics can need attention as with all old cars. Check the low box and front hubs work. The handbrakes can also be pretty useless. The leaf springs can go soft and saggy. They are great fun and very simple to work on, check the usual stuff before a long trip, bearings, oil, grease, propshafts, brakes, bushes etc etc.

The late SJs had EFI as does the Jimny. The Jimny has coil suspension and is just a bit newer in terms of general technology but still fairly basic.
