Just a quick one: where do you biodiesel producers source your methanol from?

It depends on how much you want. Most of the methanol suppliers, and there are only a few companies who supply it, the rest are sub-suppliers, have a minimum order of 1000 litres, which is fine for me, but far too much for homebrewers. Also, some of the companies want business references before they will supply.
What sort of amounts are you needing?

I am just getting my head around some of the broader points of home brewing. I guess the total would be 300 litres a year or there abouts and that would not be in one job lot either. Does 6 litres a week sound right for a single car?

It depends on what size batches of biodiesel you're going to make / how much diesel you use in your car.
Basically, you need to use 20% methanol:-
I.e. 100 litres of oil, then you need 20 litres of methanol.
1000 litres of oil, then 200 litres of methanol.
Hope that helps you work out how much methanol you'll need.
I have a contact who sells small amounts of methanol to home brewers, let me know if you want the number.
