Hi all,
I am the proud owner of a 404s for over a year now - and I have a few problems that I will be working on (or at least my local garage will!).
Firstly the engine has never really fired properly, I have now blown the head gasket, which hasn't helped!!! I tried replacing the carb and this had little effect and now am going to send it in for a rebuild. Is this a common problem with the 2.2 petrol?
Also the exhaust is knackered - so where is the best place to purchase a replacement?
Also anyone know where to get a right hand side (passenger) door top?
I know - lots of questions - all help appreciated - especially any specialists that know about these engines and can diagnose (and fix) faults.
Cheers

Hi Dude,
Good to see another mogger.

Just a note, the 404 is great to work on. Don't be scared of having a go yourself. Everything comes apart as it should and is beautifully made, the fact you can sit cross legged underneath and work on it is a bonus.
Change all the oils (engine, tranny (not GL5), fan hub, diffs (GL5 as they're hypoid) and portals (either I think - we run the GL5). Grease everything (cardans, throttle, clutch, ball joints at end of torque tubes, pedals.....and some more!).
Service the brakes (it's also less minging to change the portal oil while the wheels are off)

No, the 2.2 (and 2.8) are absolutely bomproof, overengineered, low power, low compression, low max revs.
Before the expense of a rebuild - where you'll feel obliged to replace everything at great $£$£$£$£$ - find a used one. There are a few on here who have cut up/parted out 404's (for the axles) or swapped engines. Also ask on the extreme section. May be much cheaper and quicker than a rebuild - then you'll have spares.
>Also the exhaust is knackered - so where is the best place to purchase a >replacement?
We sprung for an entire new one from Manfred at Westfield, frankly, it was a special treat. The exhaust is solidly mounted, yet made to flex (there's a loop that goes through across and down the chassis. So they're dear. If we hadn't spent so much time and money on ours, I would have munged it and rubber mounted it.
>Also anyone know where to get a right hand side (passenger) door top?
Ease if use - bet manfred could get one, with time and no money - ebay.de - I'm going to make mine (and use macralon high impact plastic)

Where abouts are you? Could possibly loan you a known good distributor.
See lots of pictures of mine in bits at http://www.foodfight.org.uk/mog/restoindex.shtml
