welcome to the mog house
do you know what model you have (could be a 421)have to post some pics so we can see/ help you with it
if it a 421 its on the later axel type and theres not many disk conversion out there at the moment
as for the diesel lump they are so simple and reliable i would see if i could get that running first

hi thanks for the welcome guys,
but really need some answers to some questions,
are you all still running drums or have you switched to disks.

bures pit is my local, and it is a bit sandy as you would expect, as this will be the weekend home for the mog, i would like disks, only because all the other offroaders i have had i.e SJ and 90 were on drums and the slop just ground them out so no brakes.

i can see a way to make my own, just copying what other people have done, using landy bits, now would you or have you made your own.

would you use two calipers per corner for front, two per corner for the rear using one of the pair as a hyd hand break my reasoning for using two per corner is that the mog is a fare bit heavier than any landy am i over doing it

The drums are good man, they're well over engineered and I wouldn't worry about them for a while.

Yep Cool , see you at Bures soon I guess once you've got the cab sorted out.

Disc conversions have been done using RRC/Disco 1 discs and calipers ,also G-wagen discs . Over the pond I think ford F150 disc's can be converted, there are also some exp£nsive off the shelf purpose designed kits.

Cheers

I've only seen one disk conversion that didn't look like some hacked together PoS. You using it on the road? Would be very difficult to make it actually legal.

There must be something you want to do other than brakes, do that!

I have started getting recon brake cylinders from the states, dear(ish) but cheaper than new, and *much* cheaper than a disk conversion.

As someone pointed out on Mog Message Exchange, the sand will nicely de-glaze the drums.

Hi David,

There are one or two over on LR4x4 forum that have converted to disc using a kit by Tibus IIRC , some pic's:

I think they come with new hubs , not sure what discs are used etc, you should be able to find it doing a search on LR4x4 , not cheap though
As a thought all the disc conversions using existing bits are based around 4x4's like RRC/Ford F150/ G-Wagen , has anyone looked at 7.5T ford cargo? 17.5" wheels so that would be ok, and air over hydraulic too , bits are common and cheap enough mmmmm will have to check it out methinks Wink

Cheers

hi my mog gods,

this is what i was after,

shaggy or anybody,
what would the implications of fitting disks be it home brewed or company bought

steveb, as we have an old ford cargo and merc 814 i have already thought about them as donors for break bits its just that both have rear drums so would have to buy extra front ends, ford OK but mers very expensive

Land rover (3.5t GVW) calipers on a 4.75t GVW mog, heresy!

I think it's actually easier to get modifications through the HGV test (wagons are fiddled with all the time) than the normal one. Depends how you have your mog registered. You'd have to tell the ministry and probably get an engineers report for the insurance. I can't imagine it'd be fun.

From the operators manual. I've always assumed I'd have about 2 ton of load available, but haven't weighed it yet.

The limit is the brakes - some of the power assisted ones have GVW of 5250KG

Piggy,

If its discs you want then discs you should have - but with some work! I took a slightly different route with the Turnip Mobile. Beneath its sleek and sophisticated exterior is a 1956 404 Mog. The drum brakes were scary, and I drive a series one landrover! A visit to the local scrappy coughed up a Leyland Roadrunner. I robbed the pedal actuator, all the pipes.3 tanks, master cylinder and the compressor.
The compressor was blanked, fitted with an oil seal and a pulley and belt driven from the engine - also got a power steering pump on the back!
The master cylinder and tanks bolted onto the chassis and the pedal actuator fitted into the standard mog pedal box.
The whole deal piped up with the existing quick fit nylon pipes and you have dual air circuit, dual hydraulic circuit brakes that stop the wheels going round - anywhere!

Hi - yes the Mog is legally on the road, although it does most of its work off road. As for telling anyone.......well the way I see it is - the brakes are far better now than they were before and if they were good enough for a 7.5 ton truck, they are good enough for a 2 ton Mog.
The trouble is if you ask too many questions, it never seems to take long before you find some jobsworth who would like to give you trouble!
Seriously though, all I have altered is the actuation mechanism and not the brakes themselves, there are 3 separate air circuits and two hydraulic, if all that lots fail, I think someone is trying to tell you something?

Here is an early pic showing the master cyl and tanks etc.
