After recent reports on UK tv re the rape of Indonesian rain forest so that the west can have bio diesel, is there any way we can find out where our "green" fuel comes from? I run on LPG most times and I know we all are slowly killing the planet but are we under some form of con when it comes to being green, are we actually doing more harm than good?

With a signature like that, Do you really care???

Yes, a lot of rainforest is being decimated for the growth of Palm trees - for Palm oil...

I know for a fact that all of my new veg oil and most of my Wste veg oil is Rapeseed, most likely from UK fields.

I am a great supporter renewable energy (and hence bio-fuels), but I also an very unhappy about the destruction of diverse forest for bio-fuel production.

Nat, I applaud your efforts wholeheartedly, but using UK crops doesn't totally absolve responsibility for the problem of rain forest destruction. Whatever was grown on the UK land before the fuel crop is still needed and has to be grown somewhere else instead. That 'somewhere else' could be on cleared rainforest.

I'm doing the best I can...

The fact is the UK has millions of acres of set aside land, we could grow enough crops to keep the whole country in bio fuels I reckon.
However the government and oil companies won't allow this.

However I will shut up now as I'm in way over my head!

Looking at the comments so far it seems we can't win, so my signature stands. Confused

The thing is, unless we get rid of everything that burns a fossil fuel and run everything from wind/sea and nuclear energy.

then we're still gonna run out of resources

Just be careful not to believe all the hype.

Yes, there is a big concern re de-forestisation to grow palm oil. However, comparatively, very little of that palm oil goes towards the bio-fuel industry, most of it is grown for the food industry, they get more money for it from the food industry.

Palm oil thickens at relatively high temperatures, so it isn't the best oil to make biodiesel out of.

How much of it comes here? I don't know, but I doubt that there are many using it in the UK to produce biodiesel. I would guess that there are far more chippies, restaurants, take aways etc using it than bio-fuel producers.

I can see how they might be used in harness to power a boat, but having seen them floundering about on beaches they would be of limited use on dry land. possibly a system could be developed in reverse of the old canal boat / horse type methods.
