am starting to help a friend put an 89 rr back together that he stripped 5 yrs ago.
are there any other axles that can be fitted to it. he as been that a disco /90 one will fit on front . will they?
also what options as he got for rear.

am asking as reason he stripped originally was a lot of noise from back one and lots of holes in chassis.

All defender/disco1/RRC axles are broadly speaking the same, there are a few minor changes.

About 1994 the diffs and half shafts changes but here are a few of the more notable changed from 10 to 24 spline

in 1986 the RRC changed from narrow radius arms (plus bushes and mounts) to wide ones. The discos were always wide radius arms and the defenders changed to wide radius arms with the introduction of the 300TDi models. If you get a different width of brackets on the axles then all you need to do is change the radius arms to suit.

On early (pre 1986) RRC rear axles the damper mounts were different, having one in front and one behind rather than both in front of the axle.

Obviously early 90/110 models had rear drum brakes rather than disc brakes.

The half/stub shafts and drive flanges on 90/110/defender stick out further than on RRC axles which can make fitting alloy wheels awkward.

Gradually over time the axles went metric, different parts at a time, but as it was only the threads and bearings that changed so a lot of the components are still interchangeable to a degree.

If its just the rear axle that you will change then basically any axle will fit, bar the pre 1986 RRC axles.
