Time to sort an engine out.

After much head scratching, I opted for 2.5Ltr non turbo 4 cam. I want the simplicity of non turbo, resonable torque, and minimum heat rejection.

A donar car was found and gently test driven Twisted Evil

The lump came out easily ... clean oil, clean coolant, compact, light ...

In complete contrast the wiring harness was a complete b***** Sad

There's some nice dry sump kits for that engine if you feel the need Smile

I think you cut a nice amount off the sump. Or, to be precise, I cut mine closer to the flange than that, and now it wont seal right Rolling Eyes
(Either starting again or I may just silicon with no gasket)

Really looking forward to the vids of your latest moving at speed and axel twisting Cool

Got some more done:

Made some front hubs.

Changed the oil filter, plugs cam belt on the new engine.

Mitsubishi CV spline stubs welded to subaru CV cups.

And work on the front suspension.

Getting it outside and being able to fully motion the suspension and have a good look round has been useful, but also shows a lot still to do.

I will need to flip it over to finish the engine mounts and fashion sump guards etc.

The front steering is a bit of a gamble. To eliminate bump steer the front tie rods need to be carefully positioned and the right length. Normally with wishbones this means either a short centre rack or an idler system. I couldn't get anything to fit and cope with the twisting diffs so I have simply put hydraulic rams either side. These are positioned perfectly for straight ahead driving but they introduce an error as lock is applied (because 1 gets longer and the other gets shorter). I hope this won't matter too much on an off road machine.

Front hubs are always a magor clearence challenge. Here I have 30cm wheel travel, 45 deg back lock and 30 deg axle twist. I need to grind and modify a few interference issues but nothing too drastic ... notice the tyres are only 1cm off the front bonnet !!

The front hydraulic ram is a snug fit. This shot shows the important load path from the cage to the front swivel.

"Drop in and bring your truck for a drive round anytime." Most generous indeed Very Happy
We often struggle for a test, as the field we have on Cannock chase is very small. It would be great to see some of this metal up close as well Cool

p.s. I like the rams. It's tech that works well on big mower decks. And on the works gillotine, which has by-pass solenoid valves to re-set the alignment every time it reaches the top of its travel.

Yes 2 standard cylinders and no other linkages means its nice and simple. I will need to join the 2 units with a bridge hose and bleed it carefully to get the toe in right Shocked

Some specs:

Wheelbase 2.24 m (88")
Track 1.8 m (71")
Height 1.55 m (61")

Wheels 16"x7"
Tyres 235 x 85 R16

Axle ground clearence 41 cm (16")
Belly ground clearence 46 cm (18")
Wheel travel 28 cm (11")
Axle twist +/- 30 deg

Mass 900Kg (target)
Weight distribution 65% rear, 35% front
Unsprung weight 120 Kg (estimate)
C of G height 750 cm (estimate)

Roll centre height 36 cm both ends (trying to limit roll moments into axle swivels)
Hub offset 2cm (to reduce kick back into the steering)
Caster 5 deg (to help self centering)
Swing axle lengths 5m (want some camber generation but limit jack under forces)
Anti dive/squat None (too difficult with twisting diffs)
Akerman Modest

My wife thinks I'm nuts:

She's right.

That's a very impressive build! Excellent quality and some impressive figures. Will be very interested to see this in the brown stuff. Cool

Have you seen the truck thats at about 7:00 into this video:

Wow. Very interesting. Looks like swing axles with portal hubs and rear steering and pivoting diff with second shocks !!

He is certainly giving it some stick in the rocks which gives me hope that my set up might be strong enough. It looks very nimple over the lumps. Lots of black smoke !

I notice he has a conventional front axle ... I'm hoping having twist both ends with hydraulic connection will give me some benefits.

I will try to find out some more about it.

I'm pretty sure both ends run an independent suspension sort of set up, then the rear swivels the whole lot. Apparently its some old Russian ex-military truck. I can't remember what it was called now, it was some odd name. The shafts and diff were basically mog.

It seemed to go very well the times I saw it driving round. He certainly wasn't shy! Very smokey diesel up front.

glad to see pics back, wondered what welding process you used to fix cv cups to splined shafts, regards fred.

The CV's were welded by premier propshafts in Atherstone. I think they use MIG on a rotary positioner as suggested.

I've learned over the years to never weld the shafts and to use the proper alignment gear on rotating parts.

One CV is taller than the other because the EVO diff is not actually quite central !

So to recap, the driveline is Subaru engine through Daimler torque converter to Jaguar gearbox to Citroen drop gear to Lada diff to BMW propshafts to Mitsubishi diffs through Subaru driveshafts front, BMW rear to Subaru hubs with Fiat brakes. So far I've not welded a shaft and only cut one spline. Very Happy still no starter motor though Sad

I've made a little progress. Pushed in a few suspension bushes:

Even got a little powder coating done:

I've flipped the tub over for the last time to complete engine mounts (Ford Transit) :

Finish the drive shafts, this is the rear CV driving through the rear pivot to the back diff:

Now I'm designing sump guards, transmission cooling, 2 last stabilisers to the rear pivot. More soon.
