hows that track coming along, is my invite still valid, l have a nice new quad now, 800cc my mind knows how to ride it, its just that my body struggles to keep up,
but more up your street l have just bought a unimog, tin work is beyond help, but l will sort some thing out and its going to get a 300tdi to help it along
so l will be moving out of the suzuki section as soon as l have sold my diesel lwb sj, and into mercedes, just stuck my head in there and it doesn't look very busy in there, perhaps they need some pics of my new toy,

Good to catch up !!, l need another lifetime to get anywhere near whats left to do , Still a little more every day , slowly , slowly catch the monkey!! .
l was more than impressed with the unimogs capability , cheating came to mind ! it made it look so easy . They dont mix well with other trucks tho , a separate day would be ideal , .
Fine on the new quad , have to bring it along , [ your invite is on going ]
bit like Paul Mac .... as n when , close the gate before you go home .
Hope to get a day in late nov, if not its the Xmas Bash , .... Dont know how I will cope !! the numbers are over my limit by far , but if all behave it should work out OK .
I have 4 small sites now on the go now , using various parts of the farm , just need to link them up ,+ a load more to develope !!, its amazing what can be done once you drive a truck through it !!
The guy who is share farming here is a bit " non plussed " as a few have driven over grassland ! , they dont see it as a cash crop ... its just grass to them...
Is that FUG still on offer ?? I may build another Buggie track next year, I miss the buzz of a 1000 cc motorbike engine buggy going sideways at 80 mph !! , Still got the crosser , n the 450 yam quad , but now over 60 it takes a day to recover from the shaking ,

thought you might like an update on this, its still alive and kicking

completly stock 410 axles under there taking some abuse, nothings broke in over a year, but it is about to switch to some widened sammy axles

I have only one bizare worry. I nearly rolled last year into a ditch of water, and I was going for the seat belt release before the kill switch! Only Terry winch man stopped the roll and the drivers side going underwater Confused Frit me anyhow Shocked So I would want a bigger cab Very Happy

But thats my only concearn, cause other wise that is just Brilliant! Why have I got a huge SPAM rangy based buggy with a big overhang, just so I can run 'Associated land rover club'? I must be daft Confused (mudplugga is convinced that my need to remain ALRC is unecessary). Hats off to the builder for a 'clockwork radio' amalagamation of old ideas into something well fresh Very Happy

There is a series one land rover at Pontwyd Wales with a mini engine in the middle and welded diffs. Very capable and perfect for those bottomless welsh bogs. Hell of a lot lighter than a normal 4x4.

I was amazed the first time i saw this a year ago and always meant to ask if the gearing was too high , then the penny dropped about the gear reduction from the diffs Embarassed So now the question is, is the gearing to low? Seems spot on in the videos

yes the narrow cab could be an aquired taste in that it does take a little getting use to, but it does have some advantages over a conventional full width cab, one that has demonstrated itself a couple of times is when you roll over on a side slope, the single cab tends to roll on to its roof and then dig in and stop due to the missing bit of cab where as the lr that was in front of us carried on rolling down the hill all the way to the bottom, but there is absolutly no reason that this could not have a full width cab if you felt happier with that

the gearing seems about right, it can pull its self up anything it can grip on easy enough, but also seems to have a fair turn of speed on the flat as well
in some of the vids you can see it go shooting off across the fiedls after it climbs out of the dips

Ever since this thread first started I have been dreaming about building something small and agile. What a great bit of kit it is.

I have a 1.7L Vauxhall/Isuzu TD engine sitting under the bench and I still have the original gearbox. I can't source a Manta or Carlton box for it. It may prove a little heavy for this type of project but then it might be a good match for my 15 St. A lighter engine may make it a bit lopsided with me in the drivers seat. Laughing

l bet there is a few people thinking about biulding something simalar me included Very Happy your right about the diesel being to heavy l think one of the main reasons this has such ability off road is the very low wieght, its under 600kg, my trouble would be keeping the wieght down, l find myself thinking things like toyota axles thats what we need because they are stronger, but he has never broken the 410 axles so why would l need toyota Rolling Eyes then l ponder about engines and start thinking about 2 lt engines Rolling Eyes l cant keep up with the engine hes got now so why would l want to go bigger/heavier ? human nature, we always want to go bigger stronger faster heavier, l have the oppotunity to copy it yet l will probally fail and end up to heavy

l bought a baleno auto recently and l hear the engine calling "put me in a buggy"


grate thing about the air shocks, you can put more in one side to counter 15 stones Laughing

i was thinking along the lines of 2l TD perkins prima with 5 speed box and rangie axles with my own hydro suspension... simple because i can get most of the bits and because i could run it on red Very Happy

nothing wrong with them components
except weight Very Happy imagine climbing up a steep bank thet needed you to use your hands as well as your feet because it is so steep and uneven, then try it it with 5 bags of cement on your back, light is going to win every time, range axles arnt light and niether are diesel engines and as for landrover gearboxes Surprised l can sling a suzuki axle over my shoulder, tuck a gear box under my arm and still skip down the shops
but then you cant beat using stuff you already have, and reds cheaper than white Smile

i was thinkin the rover montego 2l td perkins prima with the box from the car... i can get those easy enough and theyre not that heavy and well ive got a rolling rangie chassis and shell for bits...
besides a 80mpg offroader running on red? Very HappyVery Happy
and after what i put my 110 through i needa vehicle i can afford to break Very Happy
and if i had the cement bags at least when i fall flat on my face my nose can hold me there haha Wink

Good points Andy but as you say it is good to go with what you have lying around.

Another thought is maybe a shaft drive motorbike engine and gearbox but I guess all the useful torque would be too high up the rev range.

There is a guy who works near me who has a Reliant 3 wheeler. I don't know if it has the original standard engine or a tuned up engine but it goes like the proverbial off a stick.

So many ideas............ Confused

Got a pair of front axles

A pair of ARB's

A set of beadlocked Mach 5's

The engine

Still need the gearbox, steering rams, and a few odd's and sods.

This is deffo the future! great weight distribution, ultra light weight, plenty of power, 4 wheel steering, lockers front and rear

yea i must admit my mums ace and she doesnt get the credit she deserves...she took my alternator out of my td5 110 took it to be rebuilt and fitted it again for me ... and dryd my front matts out (i think there still on the wall lol)
i was at college at the time
and just incase ya wondering she was a mechanic when she was my age Very Happy

Hi Allan

the gearbox in the pics above is a manual, that subaru engine is out of an old "g" reg 1.8 subru, they do come as an auto as well,but l anit got one
Crying or Very sad they also come as 2wd or 4 wd, £200 or less should buy you an old scooby, l am thinking of using a baleno auto engine an box just because it ally and hence very lightwieght and the auto means you dont have to ponce about making gear change that works Very Happy it also means you can have your foot box smaller as you have 2 pedals to accomodate this is more important than first meets the eye when you start getting creative with the front suspension and you find the links want to cycle through where your feet are

having said all that the 2wd subaru box in the pics above has the gear chage selector rod exiting where the prop would on a conventional 2wd car gearbox
clearly this lends its self very well to making and easy gerachange mech in this situation, really only needs a gearstick up hill and it would land in your left hand nicely,
if you were to use the more common 4 wd gearbox the rear prop leaves from the back of the gearbox where my gearchange is, the gearbox is front wheel drive normally with the rear brought in by moving a lever, it would be pretty easy to use this rear prop out put to mount a very small capstan drum on that stuck out through the side of the body so as you had a little vertical capstan winch that would be ideal for recovery after you have got your self well and truley stuck Idea
l am not decided on the power plant yet but the scobby motor has a lot going for it, its all pretty light, very well packaged for positioning the seat props etc and all the heavy bits like the diff in the gearbox and the crank are right at the bottom, you probally couldent get a lower c of g
oh and it makes a really cool noise too

baloo love the look of the scoob lump and the seat but im not to sure on the wooden chassis rails to be honest

if it were me building a buggy i think my wish list would go like this....

suzuki bandit 1200cc engine on carb per pot basis mounted side on just like the above scoob lump , bang through gear box and a hand clutch mounted on the selector (still leaves two pedals in the tub but gives a manual box)

use the chain drive to run a 1 to 1 ratio cog on a suzuki transfer box mounted in the normal way with front and rear props this give the choice of two or four wheel drive with a low and high box

sammie axles with vit RnPs rear lsd or 410 axles (depends on wheel base as to width)

i would probably go for leccy steering over hydro from say a vauxhall as this can still run from a batt if the engine stalls still giving a rolling power steering on a failed climb/desent also frees up engine power as there is no drag from a big pump and its much lighter too

as to shape and body type well i guess thats down to whats in the scrappies at the time of building huh but it would have to have a space frame chassis and be running air shocks just to look the part

After watching the first video Baloo it shows how capable Marks buggy ready is...

How many £**,000 trucks on here could crawl into that tight gully and out again? Shocked

I reckon lockers front and rear and rear sterring should make for an interesting toy.

If I can keep the weight down too.. even better!!

rx7 would be fun indeed but i like the sound of bike engines

busa turbo 1300cc good for a drag bike good for a buggy Twisted Evil

to be honest i think that you could use almost any fwd engine mounted side ways so left and right become front and back drives and build in a similar way to the above buggys

i guess at the end of the day its user build so should be user freindly too is keeping the weight down such a must as its still going to be lighter then the next car based 4x4 even an sj and will deffo have a better load balance too

as you have said above there are not many that would do the things that the buggy above would but would 100kg more really hurt the performace that much after all its 300kg+ lighter than an stock sj and probably 2-2.5 tonnes lighter than a challage spec landrover with all its kit ready to go
