My 404 has a large tube behind the front steering guard with coolant pipes connected to it, the manual refers to it as a heat exchanger, but i cant really see what it does? can I do away with it, as its so rusty its about to fall off! any ideas?
Thanks Mike

It is a tube for a "swingfire heater" which basically is a engine preheater for artic conditions. It has a petrol powered motor which inserts through the tube and the exhaust warms the water in the tube.
It doesnt really need to be there but It serves a dual purpose as jacket tattie / sausage roll warmer when off roading lol.
If you do remove it, remember to blank the tubes off or source the original blanking plugs as they arent found on every 404.
I'd of had it off you if it were in decent nick.

I couldnt source the original blanking plugs so I just took the outlet pipes out, give them a whack with BFH to flatten end and then crimp them over in a vice (think of toothpaste tube crimped end), doesnt lose any coolant.

Great, thanks for the info, ill remove the whole lot and blank off the pipes on the side of the engine block. There is a pipe to the battery box too which can go in the bin! I do have a spare heat exchanger in good nick if you need one.
thanks mike
ps. anyone got a spare gearbox input shaft? the bit that goes in the end of the crankshaft has broken off on mine.
