|
|
|
Got the engine running, vaguely. But as the title suggests its making noises resembling a bag of spanners.
It sounds very tidy at idle, and it revs to about 3rd of the revs, then any more and it starts backfiring and flames through the carb. Then it cuts out.
I've replaced the old dizzy cap, replaced and set points, cleaned and checked the plugs, cleaned rotor arm.
I've set the carb up as it states in manual.
Cant seem to get strobe lamp working on the leads to time it perfect.
And thats from 4 days solid out in the damp.
HELP

sounds like your timing is out or your plug leads are incorrectly fitted

Thats a good idea, didnt think about that, right, off to get feeler gauges.
I dont think theres a problem with the dizzy, though thanks for the offer.
Where are the weights in the dizzy? The dizzy I have has been left out in the elements for the past 10 years since being out of service, so could well be them.

Cleaning and rebuilding the distributor is a good idea, even if it's not causing your current problem. It's not hard to do and it's a good pmcs item.
Check out this site for step by step instructions for Bosch distributor rebuilding. They don't have the one used in the 404, but they all seem pretty much alike.

Happy mogging.

Well found out that...
The tappets were incorrectly set...now sorted
And its only firing on 4 all the time, intermitent on 2 cylinder and 5 not sparking at all.
Took leads off and they are sending a spark, so....
New plugs me thinks.
thats another 60 odd quid to add to the bill.
