Hi, have been playing with Land Rovers for years but now bought a proper off roader, a mog 404! the petrol engine is seized solid and I would like to go for a diesel, I have seen a German company selling a expensive bellhousing to fit a 5cyl merc engine. What other diesel engines have been fitted to 404's??
thanks Mike

theres a web site that goes into great detail about the fitting of any merc engine and acording to that site the 613 engine still requires the bellhousing due to the placement of the starter and the difference in clutches

Thanks for the replys gents, I'm happy to do mods to the cab to make and an engine fit but would like one that bolts up to the standard bellhousing. Which vehicle did you get the 2.8 engine from?
cheers mike

I've seen in close up Tims (straightforward) conversion, and it looks a straight swap, with no changing of the bellhousing, just cut away into the drivers footwell and new engine doghouse covers.

I can confirm the problem with the 613 engine. Everything looks like it fits but the starter motor only just engages with the flywheel with the tips of the gear teeth.
My first Mog was a 404 already converted. It went through several starter motors before we realised what the problem was.
The other problem was that the diesel washed all the petrol "varnish" off the insides of the fuel tanks and clogged the fuel filter reguarly for the first 2000 miles.
Other than that it was a good conversion averaging 20 mpg.

ok, so looks like the 613 would be a good option if the started motor problem could be overcome. Which type of merc is the 613 fitted to, is that a 4 or 5 cyl engine
thanks mike
