I want to do away with the NATO plug on my landie and replace it with a 7 pin standard plug is there anything to watch out for in particular or is it a matter of checking each wire to see whats live when each light is on

I don't know anything about the NAto socket, but it should be a simple? case of switching on a light and tracing which cable comes live, and connect to appropriate terminal on 7 pin socket.
Just done a google for nato wiring and found out that a member of this very forum asked about it and found a solution, although I don't know what the solution was. Members name was "rdover".
Best regards
Alan
