Hey guys, just joined the forum and it looks good.

I've just bought a 404 and it's a bit of a shed. First and foremost, I want to get it running. And eventually, assuming objective 1 is met (!), I'll try to re-register it for road use.

It's on a q-plate, does anyone know what I need to do to get age-related plates for it when I do eventually get it roadworthy?

Cheers
Iain

Hi there, Welcome to DIFFLOCK.

I don't know much about Mogs, but I reckon if its on a Q then it'll most likley have to stay with a Q.

I'll buy it if you don't get it running Very Happy

Dude,

I got a f**ked old 404 and we've restored it and re-registered it to a historic HGV (needs plates and MOT but free tax).

I wrote up my experiences here - http://www.foodfight.org.uk/mog/registering.shtml - mostly early last year so it should still be valid.

You got some pictures? You can see what we've done on my site above, there's a few owners here, but the best technical 404 resource is the mog mailing list - you can search tens of thousands of posts here - www.mogmsgexch.com

best of luck - they're fantastic to work on, but there are a few top tips

Hi, Welcome to Difflock.

I also have a knackered old 404 double cab which hardly had any cab left, thanks to it being an ex lifeboat launcher.

Its well on the way to being restored now though.

I was very surprised that I didnt need as much wd40 as expected...german engineering you see.

The original petrol engines they put in the 404s were M130, 2.8l twin carbs or the M180, 2.2l, single carb. They did do a few from factory with a diesel in, but cant remember the engine, thats not to say that its had a conversion at some point.

we want pics

There are loads of the german, swiss and belgium troop carriers and (less so) radio boxes. There are also loads of obscure specials.

Is there a plate under the bonnet with the various numbers still on it? Mine didn't have it. There'll be something like 404.114 on it, which is the model number.

Failing that, the chassis number is on the right hand chassis rail, just in front of the shock mounting, on the bottom part of the rail. That will also have the model number as the first part (404114006352 or something).

You can then have a stab at working out what it is and where it came from. It's the number you'll have to give Ma Benz UK to get a datacard from germany,
