Aww thats a shame!

Well once I get the EGT sorted out I will give the power screw and the diaphragm a crack. I really should start looking seriously into an intercooler setup as well.

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum, but looks as though there are some knowledgeable people out there when it comes to the Daihatsu 2.8td.

I am currently putting one in my landrover and am really interested in all the tweeks discussed!

I currently have 2 engines here, a DL-50 2.8 TD (gear driven cam) and a DL-52 2.8 TD (belt driven). Which is the better motor, I like the idea of having no belt!!?? The DL-50 will be intercooled (TD5 intercooler) on installation. Do they both respond equally well to tweeking?

I have also noticed the DL-50 has a larger turbo (IHI RHB-6) compared the the newer DL-52 (IHI RHB-5). Is there any major differences in power, lag etc with either turbo. I wasn't sure if the new smaller turbo was more efficient, with a quicker spool time but still did the job at the top end or whether it will run our of puff!

I look forward to your take on these motors and turbo's.

welcome to the nut house Very Happy

i cant help with the dl-50 as i have only had the dl-52 but i cant see there being too much in it and i would perfer the gear driven rather than belt.

the dl-52 will pull all the way up to the red line and comes on full boost from as little as 1800rpm,some dont make full boost till 2100rpm Confused

it all depends on what you will be doing with the lr after its fitted but if you have both engines i would go for the dl-50 and if you find it has too much turbo lag then fit the turbo from the dl-52

Thanks for the reply. The Landy will be used for a bit of everything, road use, towing, green laning etc, so looking for the best compromise of torque, economy and drive-ability really.

Think the dl-50 is the clear winner just for having the gear driven cam.

Turbo manifolds are completely different designs, and there are a few differences in the casting on the blocks as well, but looks as though they will swap over with a bit of creative thinking. Another difference in the turbo's is that the DL-52's is water cooled and the DL-50's isn't. Not sure if this would have any affect on the amount of tweeking (EGT) that the earlier turbo can stand.

I also need to swap the filter housing over as need the filter to hug the block as the DL-52, but on removing them there is an additional drilled hole (looks as though from the relief valve) that appears to go straight into the crank case. Has anyone swapped these filter housings and did you just drill this additional hole??
