A while back I had to replace a frost plug in the 2nd head of my 2.5td Cherokee. Job done but when I went to start the vehicle there was an awful banging, so I switched it off. Left it sit for a few weeks, now it tries to turn over but won't fire. The starter is iffy anyway. But as I was investigating the banging I noticed the following.

With the nuts off the first two rocker units (A) - there is more thread available on the first rocker assembly, the rocker support on the 4th push rod (working back from grille) push rod sits up and causes the rocker support to 'hover' (C). When I tighten the nuts, it merely compresses the spring (Y) - (obviously opening the valve - which is what I suspect and feared caused the banging). The rush rod is seated in the tappet, is there anyway the tappet could be 'expanded' and jammed - holding the rod up higher? if so am I looking at completely stripping the engine? I don't think I have the heart to do all that - replacing the frost plug nearly drove me demented.

How does a hydraulic tappet work? Can they seize? Does this make any sense?

I have very little hair left to pull out.

Thanks Peter, that's actually good news, but what has happened? why is it the rod and rocker I need to replace - what's malfunctioning?
