I remember reading somewhere about some guys in Oz that had made roof lights that flicked up and down..
I have sourced some mini air rams, and have started planning the hinge etc.. but was gonna have a look how the other guys had done it...
Its basicaly so that you can raise and lower roof lights so that they dont get damaged by trees etc.. very neat indeed..
Anyone...?

I cant wait to see the result of this sounds very fancy.
I run 4 light force on the roof and i have really battered them in forest its a good job they are tuff but at the end of the day they are very expensive so i would love to be able to hide them away.

Someone posted a video clip of a truck ( im sure it was an Ozy truck ) and the driver lowered the roof lights down on air rams as he went under a tree.. it was very neat..
Im only at the planning stage.. but it shouldnt be to hard to do..
Already have the kit and the on board air..
Are your lights the ones from X-eng??

hello Allan
me and my brother were thinking about this the other day and come up with the idea of using sprung loaded door hinges so if the light does take a hit it would spring back and then slowly move into its original place on the roof hopefully avoiding and damage

Ive thought about all different ideas too.. but the video clip ( if i could find it ) was so cool.. they could fold their lights down using onlyair rams.. and but them up whenever they wanted...
Door hinges sound like an alternative.. keep us posted if ya do it..

i am making a removable light bar on the top that mounts to the cage and it wired up using trailler fitting just unplug and remove ,
why not get the ones from jez (ladoga guy with "petal" the lr) they are bulletproof ,
you can make x-eng lights,
get some thick tube desire length to protect and sink in a 55w/100w light like these (but you can get them in 150w as well)

Scrapped the pop up and down lights..
After a few beers.. and a chat with a fellow difflocker.. have come up with an idea for making unbreakable roof lights..
2" dia.. solid steel.. and uber bright..
Watch this space..

Sorry, I have not been in this area for a while. I would have been the person posting the lights. Here are some photos of various vehicles. Virtually all the comp vehicles run them this way now.

Has anyone considered the lights from X-ENG?
They look pretty damn tough!

eerrrrrr nat see my post ,
X-ENG lights are bleedin expensive for people on a sort of budget, especially when you can make x-eng type lights for less than 20 quid

The idea is such a cool one.. |
I did not post a video, so I am not sure where you would find it. They usually have the lights set for fast down, slow up. That is, you need to get them down in a hurry when you see a branch coming up.

Sorry tiny one, I didn't see that.
How about!
You use some of these http://www.eurobatteries.com/sitepages/12vdownlighters.asp
You could mount them flush into your front bumper, tailgate, windscreen surround etc, they're cheap, they use the same bulbs as the X ENG lights (MR16 sealed beam halogen) and I'm pretty sure the stainless ones would be just fine outside!

Nat thats along the lines of what I have planned..
Once mine are done ( within the next four weeks) I will be able to take a baseball bat to them and they wont break.. thats strong enough for me!!!
Those bulbs are £1 each.. easy to change.. and the 50mm 50w ones are perfect..
I'll post pics when im done..

Are people really suggesting (and doing I assume) fitting domestic 12v spotlight bulbs. The filaments in these (unlike auto bulbs) are not designed to withstand vibration. Also theres a reason that Lightforce and PIAA etc lights cost so much - reflector and lense design.
If you're wanting some lights to "look cool" I'm sue your downlighters will do the job - for a short while at least. But if you want some lights that will actually give out a decent amount of light and be legal on the road (down lighters aren't E marked) then I suggest you buy some proper lights.
With spot/fog/auxillary/driving lights - what ever you want to call them - biggest is best. The bigger lights have far more efficieant reflectors and focus the light where you want it. No need for shrouds to keep the light off you bonnet (like X-eng) if the beamt is right in the first place.
Many of the better lamps also have incredibly strong lenses and cases, provided you mount them in such a way that they can give a branch shouldn't worry them. Unless its the sort of branch that could take your mounts off in which case what were you doing driving at that speed under it anyway.

Who said anything about being road legal?? when have roof mounted lights ever been road legal?????
X Eng lights use the bulbs.. and at less than £1 each.. I dont really mind if they only last six months..
Bigger is better?? not really a viable argument.. take HID lights for example... they aint gotta be masive but Ive never seen anything brighter yet..
Im talking about making some lights for off road use only, that are unbreakable and are cheap to maintain..
Each to their own i guess..

Someone was talking abouit putting them in his bumper.
You can buy H1 - H7 bulbs for under £1 so that arguement doesn't stand up
Have you seen any proper HID lights from Hella, PIAA or Lightforce in action - if you think those tiddly things are good you should see the real thing.
Theres loads of cheap half decent lights on ebay, like Lucas 20/20s, not the greatest but far better than most and good value.
Like you say each to their own. Mines getting cibie oscar +'s for the roof to go with the Cibie Turinis in the bonnet pod, all bougfht cheap off ebay, pods off an Group A escort cosworth.
But as you say each to their own.

sptb is right about the big hid light force they are stronger than the sun. But like allan says small hid are very bright to. I personally love lights and have had lots of different ones. Putting any light on the roof greatly weakens there performance even the light force on mine (just the 130w ones by the way) Dont look to be half as bright on the roof as when i put them on the bumper.
I used to run 150 w sealed beam kc's and they were the most impresive value for money light i have owned.
I also had pro oscars (h4 hi and lo type) very bright with 100/130's in but not a very strong light.
The light force are very stong though i have hit trees and bent them right back to my roof rack but they have never broke (i think i need some wood to touch)
I cant wait to see the results of Allans creations because i will be sure to use the idea in the future, because lets face it you cant have too many lights.

Bi-Oscars I think you'll find, have a pair of those to go on when the pods not on, using Hella 2000s (as haven't got round to changin them) at the moment but. Never used the cibie version but PIAA's H4 lights are great and Super Oscars (which the Bi Oscar is based on) are pretty good anyway. The casings pretty strong (steel) and the lenses are toughened glass, which will put up with a bit of abuse. Have you had issues with breaking them?

Big Patrol... touch some wood quick?? think your spots have done that enough.. lol
It all comes down to the type of light you want too..
I want mine for night green laning.. I want to see about 20mtr ahead.. thats all..
Im not looking for 5 mile beams..
I still dont think you'll get a brighter light than a HID.. but thats just me..

Sorry if I gave the impression my idea was the best.. Its far from it..
And im gonna build my own lights.. not cos im a cheap skate or on a budget..
Im gonna try out an idea ive got.. it should be the best soloution for me..
It wont suit everyone.. it may suit no one.. Im just willing to share in the event it may be uselfull to a fellow difflocker..
Guess in a perfect world id have air powered rams lifting and lowering my giant HID's.. lol
But if my idea works it will be strong, simple and effective.. that formula normally works for off roading.. lol
