Hi all,

Looking for advice ahead of buying a new set of tyres for a 2021 Hilux.

I'm a fencing and digger contractor so spend a decent amount of time towing 3.5 ton. My work also means often I use the pickup with and without trailer on poorly maintained tracks as well as some off road. I'm on the west coast of Scotland so roads are usually wet, often steep and rarely strait.

So I'm looking for the good traction off road but most importantly good traction on wet roads when pulling away and breaking with a fully laden trailer.

Currently has factory 265/60/18 duelers on which have been fine on road but id like more grip off road. They are not run out but getting low at 16,500 miles.

I like the look of Dunlop Duratrac but they don't do this size in UK as far as I can tell.

I've had BFG AT in the past and although I think they're still ok my most recent pair seemed to wear out a lot quicker than the good old ones did...

Also like the look of Cooper ST Maxx and they have my size. I've had STT and AT in the past and think the maxx looks a good middle ground tyre. Any one towing with these?

Open to suggestions, not after budget stuff, I'm after the best tyre for the job.

I would consider going to 265/65/17 if it meant more options but not sure it does. 265/70/17 sees a good drop in price on the Cooper ST Maxx but I doubt Toyota Warranty would like the change in diameter. Had wondered about 255/55/19 Duratrac but prefer more rubber than wheel rather than the other way around and would miss that 10mm contact with the road.......

You are better of looking to see what is available stock wise due to shortages in the tyre industry. with various makes and then make a decision, the Goodyear wrangler Duratrac is a good one to go for, but yet again check availability, new pattern BFG do seem to wear quicker , than the old pattern, probably down to a change in compound etc to appease peoples needs for less noise. I would not go oversize unless the vehicle is out of warranty, seen a lot of warranty cases thrown out for a variety of reasons, if you did i would change all 5 and get another just in case, many many people change 4 and not 5 tyres and hope no issues arise.

Morning Mr Tyre,

Thanks for your reply.

Agreed on over sizing, it makes more sense to stick with current size for gearing and towing anyway. It's just a bit annoying to see a slightly bigger tyre in the same make for £80 less....

I had my heart set on Duratracs but they don't do 265/60/18 or 265/65/17 in this country. I even wondered about buying some from the states and shipping them over but I don't how sensible that is or what I'd get charged import tax.

It seems on line that BFG AT, Cooper ST MAXX and AT are available in my size so will probably be one of them. I think removing the bead protector from BFG AT was a sign of moving away from a tough tyre.

How did you rate the ST MAXX? (I saw in a search you were going to see some in use a while ago)

Hello Thomas, mytyres.co.uk have/had Duratrac 265/65R17 listed at £175 ish but surprise surprise, no stock. Got a company using ST Maxx, the mileage on them is generally good, but how well tyres last is down to looking after them to a certain extent, especially in the job you do, i would check yearly the wheel alignment, maybe twice a year.
As for importing them in have a chat with an importer and see what they say, if the exchange rate was farther apart and the duty was low/lower then it may well be worth looking into.
