The WJ G Cherokee uses Quadra Drive. - A chain driven transfer case, offering 4-All Time hi and 4wd lo.
4-All time, the vehicle is in rwd all the time and transfers power to the front to match when traction is lost.
4-lo, the front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 reduction gear ratio.
The WJ Quadra Dive uses Jeep's Vari-Lok differentials. These send drive from one wheel to the other in the same axle. Similar to LSD.
IMO the Vari-Lok is alot better as it does not brake the spinning tyre, which leads to loosing momentum, it just transfers the power to the other one, which can make a difference IMO.
Hope it helps

Oh - If it is the Special Edition WJ Grand Cherokee it could have the Qudra-Trac II. It does have the same transfer case as the Quadra-Drive but it has NONE of the Jeeps Vari-Lock Differentials. So essentially it has open diffs.
Less to go wrong, but alot less traction from standard.
Note: Im pretty sure that the Quadra-Drive can NOT recieve Air Lockers, but the Qudra-Trac II can.

How do you know if it has quadra drive or quadra trac?
Was quadra drive an option or did it come standard on certain models?
I've been looking at grand cherokees but i can't tell which models have which transfer system and the dealers selling them are no wiser.
I've been looking at either the 4.7V8 or the 2.7 diesel, doesn't matter which one as long as the spec is right

We have both in stock. You can tell by looking at the gear shifters. On the automatic or manual casing it will say Quadra Drive or Quadra Trak II.
Another way of telling is the vehicle model.
If it says Grand Cherokee Limited on the side of the doors, the boot door or the VIN plate, it will be a Quadra-Drive transfer case. It will most likely have the 2.7 mercedes diesel engine.
If it says Grand Cherokee Special Edition on the side door, boot door or the VIN plate it will be a Quadra-Track II. It will most lilely have a 4.0L or 4.7 engine by Chrysler Jeep.

If for some random reason the vehicle has no badge, or model markings, jack the rear of the jeep up. Turn one wheel one way and if the opposite tyre moves in the same direction then will be The Quadra-Drive transfer case with the Vari-Lok differentials.
If the opposite rear tyre moves in the opposite direction then you have open diffs, no Vari-Lok and the Quadra-Trak II Transfer case.

If you look at the picture, I have circled where the Model type is located. It should say "Grand Cherokee" and then either "Limited" or "Special Edition" in the circled area.

I was under the impression that it was the top spec petrol models which would have had the quadra drive option.
The plot thickens... lol
did you say you have some stock of grand cherokees?

We have 2x. Both are used by employees as company cars.
One is the 2.7 Limited Quadra-Drive and the other is the Special Edition 4.7L Quadra-Trak II. Both are 2004 Automatics.

The choice could be optional when buying from new on what Transfer case is chosen, but From the WJ 2.7's ive seen they have been matted to the Quadra-Drive.
Hardtopsuk is located near Swindon Wilts, you can see our link my signature.
The 2.7 is a 2004 Model, full electrics, leather, sat nav etc. automatic last time i looked it was around 60,000 miles. Unfortunately they are not for sale at the moment. As they are very reliably vehicles for our staff.
If I see any decent ones around I could send you a PM?

Trans and/or transfer case noises. Oil leaks on the diffs. Some early 99's WJ's can suffer from rust, but if you can get a 2003+ then you will be fine. Just check that it has had a good service and if any parts have been replaced then make sure they are Genuine Jeep/Chrysler parts. Check all the electrics, windows, wing mirrors, heated seats etc
The Merc 2.7 is the best engine Jeep WJ have ever used. Good solid Oil burner. High mileage ones can be abit noisy but most Merc engines if serviced well will do 300,000+ miles.
If you are looking to buy a 4.7, made sure that it has LPG and that it is in good working order and if possible a record of installation. The LPG is cheap enough that it works out about the same in cost to run as a 2.7, but you will be filling it up 5x times as often.
Our MPG figures are: 30+ mpg in the 2.7 and 10mpg in the 4.7L

just to clarify one point if you jack the rear up and spin one wheel if the other spins in the oposite direction surely it will have an open diff (because it will rotate on the planet gears) as if you have a lsd the wheel will spin in the same direction
and the 4.0l straight six is the best engine jeep have ever used and the most reliable

This is what threw me when looking at GC's and asking about the Quadra drive...
http://www4.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/.../s711ar?logcode=p
It states that it is a 2.7 CRD Limited with Quadra TRAK, and from what has been said before in the post it sounds like it should have Quadra DRIVE.
Hence the reason for my confusion and question asking...

The WJ 4.0 and 2.7 CRD Limited are fitted with Quadra Trac II. The WJ 4.7 V8 Limited, 2.7 CRD Overland and 4.7 High Output V8 Overland are fitted with Quadra Drive.
Both these systems use gerotors and clutch plates. The difference between the two is that Quadra Drive is a superior system that has a gerotor in each axle, which will divert power to whichever wheel has the most traction on that axle, in addition to a gerotor in the transfer case that diverts power to the axle that has the most traction. Quadra Trac II only has the gerotor in the transfer case.
The later-model WK is fitted with Quadra Drive II across the range. This is an electronically-controlled system, and is totally different to the system used on the WJ.
