Hi all,
This weekend I completed a half day 4x4 training course. I really enjoyed it as I'd previously completed a couple of rather tame (drive across a grass field) type off road experience before. I feel like I learned a lot and it's since given me a bit of a buzz and desire to want to do more. I've often thought about buying an old 4x4 to take to a venue to drive around but I've always talked myself out of it as Im not mechanical at all and I may feel intimidated going and not really having an idea of what I'm doing (hence the half day training) I found it really helpful and whilst most of what I learned was common sense, it's nice to out it into practice.
Since Saturday, I've been contemplating buying a 4x4 but I don't really know where to start. I was wondering if I could ask for some vehicle suggestions? I'd like to sort of spend as little as possible as I'm unsure how much of a hobby it will become but the way I can justify it is we currently are a 1 car house hold, so would be great to have a second car for use, but equally have something that I can take off road and put my newly learned skills to use. I have looked at Jimny's and vitaras but unsure which way to go. I've been looking at shoguns too, but would be great for some helpful advise for a newbie!

welcome to the mud!
unless you want to go extreme a jimny could be ideal, easy to modify, plenty about and probably not too dear on insurance if std.
you will find at any 4x4 day a few std vehicles which will be driven round quite gingerly and a few modded ones driven into quite hard looking terrain.
where are you located?
if you don't worry about body damage like scratches and the odd dent then almost anything will do, also think about how far you want to travel to sites as some are not so good on long road runs.
i have a modded vitara and it will go almost anywhere i want it to go, but the cost of the mods far outweigh the cost of the base vehicle and i did it all myself so did not pay anyone to do the work.
the first thing to get would be better tyres, makes all the difference esp with winter coming.
this is a typical 4x4 drive day near me
