New SATNAV and Freelander. Instalation query

Hi, I've been away for a spell. For those who don't know (or remember) me,

my Email address is my old RAF service number, and UI sign with mu "LAST THREE" (Proper name is John) I've moved from South Wales and now live in Milton Keynes. Due to my wife (Barbara) being crippled with arthritis, i no longer drive Series Landies, and now have a Freelander (Oh, the shame!)

The Freelander has a strange transmission noise, and the clutch has started to slip. Barbara says I can buy a tidy Disco, and we can probably afford something not too expensive, without a trade in, but the current plan is to get the Freelander fixed ... unless you have alterrnative suggestions. ??? Butb be quick!

Todays question.

I have A Freelander TD4. My daughter gave me a Sat-Nav for Xmas. The instruction book says the sat nav must be "disconnected" when starting the engine. Which would be a PITA, and easily forgotten.

Is there anyway round this problem. Do either of my cigar lighters self isolated when the key is turned to START position?

Hi John,

Long time no post.

I have a TomTom satnav and I don't disconnect it when starting and nothing has gone wrong.

The fag lighter socket nearest the gear lever is only live when the ignition is on. The other socket is live all the time. The socket in the load space is live all the time.

Yeah, long time. Coming up for three years, I think. I lost a lot of contacts when I moved house, and our new (1980s) bungalow didn'y have a proper master box.

PS. SWMBO has OK'd me buying a well priced Disco ... which would still leave me with the Freelander to get rid of ... but taking the loss might make sense. Let's see what the cost of a new clutch, and fixing the rumble will come too.

John, an IRD unit is mounted under on the rear with a prop like a rear wheel drive vehicle, it supplies drive to the rear wheels. If at sometime in it's life it has had new tyres on the front (and not the rear), the unit gets red hot and can't cope with the difference in diameter between new and old tyres and usually seize up. What people have done before now is remove the ird unit and shafts and the prop, so you have just a front wheel drive car. The DVSA cottoned onto it, and got MOT testers to red ticket them, if anything was missing underneath, saying that it is listed as a 4 wheel drive, and should be tested as one.

Do you have a Freelander 1 or a Freelander 2. Only the F 1 has an IRD, the F 2 hasa Haldex unit in the rear axle.

Sorry to hear about your wife, i'm with you on that, my wife is 85 and has a range of medical problems and recently the local hospital has been our second home.

What year is your Freelander?

Hi 602,

The Freelander 1 was produced from 1997 to 2006 and has the spare wheel on the rear door, later ones had a TD4 engine. The Freelander 2 was produced from 2006 to 2014 and the spare is under the loadspace floor. Engines are TD4 manual and SD4 auto.
