Hi,
I'm still chuntering on about getting my wife into a Land Rover, despite her having two arthritic knees. I've also realised that my garage up'nover garage door is not quite too high enough.
I've agreed to purchase a 1959 88" Landy with 4x2 axle and gearbox, but no engine. (MOT and VED exempt) My cunning plan is two fold ...
1. Fit a smaller engine ... I'm thinking Marina 1.8 (MGB lookalike), or Ford Cortina 1600. Hopefully not relevant, but emissions are related to the year of manufacture of the engine.
2. Fit reduced OD tyres, mounted on 16" Defender wheels, or smaller Weller wheels. Either will need to be tubeless friendly. I have seen pictures of a Series 2 88", on 16" wheels, but fitted with 60 profile tyres. It did not look "wrong". The Landy will weigh between 1000 and 1250 kg. I will be unlikely to take it off road, but will be mixing it with Milton Keynes traffic.
Are there any reasons why I cannot fit a 60 profile tyre onto a Defender rim? I cannot use the original Series rims, as there are intended for tubed tyres.. I'm assuming that there are neither tubed 60 profile, not tubes to fit.
Historic commments
... many yonks ago, a Series One Landy, fitted with an MGB engine used to campaign, succesfully, off-road.
... There are adaptor plates to convert a Series Land Rover to accept a Ford V6 engine. My understanding is that any Ford gearbox can be bolted up to any Ford engine. My logic thinks that any Landy to Ford adaptor plate must also fit any Ford engine.
Your comments and suggestions, please.
602 (born 1939, now entering my second childhood ... many yonks ago I fitted a BMC 2.2 diesel engine and gearbox into an Austin Champ, despite the engine oil-pump wanting to occupy the same point in space as the front differential).

The only technical reason you can't fit 60 profile tyres to a LR Series rim and or tubeless 5.5 inch rim is the rim is too narrow, sometimes by half an inch others by 1.5 inches plus.
But the choice is yours, i am just looking at the tech side of it.
You used to be able to get 60 profile tubes but have not seen any for a long while now.

Hi Mr Tyre,
I'm looking to fit smaller "round things" onto my next S2 Landy. Using Series wheels would mean tubes. A member of the S2 Club has fitted 60 profile tyres, presumably using Defender steel wheels and tubeless tyres. I'd like to go even smaller, but limited by what will fit over the brake drums, and possibly the legality of using trailer tyres on prime mover.
IN CONFIDENCE. My wife's right arm was destroyed by a "medic" when she three days old ... shoulder ... elbow ... wrist ... grip. But this was in the middle of the Swansea Blitz, so people had other things on their minds.
I met her in 1964, and was promptly posted to Penang, so very rapid wedding.
I taught her to drive in a Sunbeam Talbot 90. On returning to UK, she had one professional lesson, before taking her test an a very rusty Mini, in South London. January 1st 1971 ... it snowed, but tests resumed at lunchtime. She passed.
She has Grass Autotested her Reliant Sabre 6GT, Historic Road Rallied her TVR Vixen, twice been stopped on the M4, at 100mph+
on the M4, in her Honda CRX. and warned not to do it again.
As Contracts Manager at DVLA at DVLA she had an 8-figure mandate, and the first figure wasn't a "1". She says it ruined her house keeping skills.
As Secretary (not typist) of the DVLA Executive Board, her first meeting was with Linda Chalker (a lovely lady). Her second meeting had Tom King as it's guest. Twenty minutes before the meeting, she was told to take the Chair. She met the Sec Of State in the lift, during lunch break. "They dropped you in it there!" he commented. (Maybe it was his idea?)
She met various other Secs of State, tended to break the ice by asking question like "Have you still got your Reliant Sabre?" and "Does your MGB have heavy steering?
Barbara passed the promotion board to SEO, but the Director wanted her to represent the Dept, on a Deputy PMs "Task Force", all members retaining their present grade, and pay scale. Most of the other delegate were police Chief Superintendents.
Barbara is now crippled with arthritis in both knees. Her gammy arm prevents her using most walking aids. She still drives a manual gear box, but will need an auto if/when she gets new knees. She's a Tough Cookie. I still wake up ... screaming.
I've been associated with Series Land Rovers since 1958 ... RAF in UK. Arabia, Malaya, and Civvy Street, but sold my last one just over a year ago, when Barbara could no longer climb into it. Withdrawal symptoms are telling me that I need another ... one that Madam can get her bum into.
The plan is to fit a sub-2000cc engine ... Ford or BMC ... or maybe Rover 2000 P6, to compensate for the tiny wheels. An auto would be desirable, but difficult to get the longer gearbox passed the middle cross-member ... the one with the big hole in it.
Please don't reply to this mail, but OK to make none personal comments on the forum.
John (602 ... my RAF "last three")

I was wondering..
Hi Nightbar,
The brontasaurus had a brain the size of a walnut. They used to wander around Northern Europe ... wondering where they had been.
You were about to say?

In 1984, I requested a Medical Retirement from the Civil Service. They sent my for psychological tests (Head Shrink in South Wales, a lovely man). He told me to ... get out of that job before you wake up in a strange place, and not know how you got there ...
IQ=132, MQ=140. "What does that mean?" I asked. He laughed, said he had to get by on an MQ of 60 (I think he was joking).
The clown in DHSS looked at my sick note ... "Nervous Debility? Who said that?" .... "Doctor A*****?" "How the Hell did you get to see him? Go home, and stay there until Dr A***** tells you otherwise!" An offer to good to refuse. My lovely wife, on HEO max, was happy to keep me, and my GSDs, and my horses, and my Land Rovers, etc.
I only mention this, in case there anybody here who has a "black dog" lurking in the background. If so ... ask for help!

Hi,
I was trying to explain WHY I wanted my"dinky" Land Rover, and perhaps why I verge towards unconventional thinking (because I can).

Hi Both,
Thankyou for that photo ... strangely, I had seen it on the Series 2 Forum, a couple of hours ago.
My approach will be slightly different, and probably a little more civilised ... but hey ... each to his own.
Mt Tyre, I followed up your lead (it was you, wasn't it?) about wheels and tyres ... it looks like I will be going to Nene Valley for wheels and tyres, but after the total end of lock-down, and when the current owner can deliver it. You location obviates me coming to you ... I'm in MK. (Buckinghamshire).
It would make sense to get the "alternative" engine in situ before spending big bucks on wheels and tyres, but that would mean pulling the hard-top, so I can get the truck into my "economy" height garage. Hmm! I wonder if I could roll it under the "up'nover" door if I fitted it with bare 16" wheels (no tyres).
I have a "snotty" neighbour living down the road, who commented on my ever so slightly overgrown front garden ... she has gone for the sheet concrete approach. When I was living in the Swansea Valley, I'd have just tethered one of my goats where I needed some bareness. (It has been suggested that it was goats who "developed" the Sahara Forest). If the Old Biddy had got really nasty, I'd have brought my Billy down from the field... you could taste him at fifty paces.
