Strange question FAO Mr Tyres
Hi,
Come the end of lock-down, I will be taking delivery of my next project, a 1959 Series 2, 88", 4x2, which is currently without an engine. Two problems, (or is it three?)
1. It is too tall to fit into my garage.
2. The seats are too high for my wife to climb into. She still drives.
The 602 solution? Fit smaller wheels.
I was thinking along the lines of Weller "steel slots" drilled to fit Land Rover stud pattern, and the smallest rim diameter that will fit ... think, 10" drums, 11" drums, and disc brakes have not yet been ruled out.
Discuss!
Smaller wheels and tyres will improve cornering, and improve VR between tyre diameter and brake drum diameter, so improve brake efficiency. AND reduce the seat height. AND reduce the roof height. Win! Win! Win!
A mate on the S2 Forum also has an 88", but sitting on 60 profile tyres, which does not "look wrong". Hmmm! Could that be taken a couple of stages further ... 15" wheels ... 14" wheels? Dunno!
Note! A Suzuki Jimny is smaller than the original 80" Land Rover, but looks "right" on 14" wheels.
Problem! Smaller wheels would give the effect of driving permanently in a lower gear. The Series 2286cc engine is not suited to screaming.
My thoughts are veering towards fitting a Cortina 2 litre, Marina 1.8 (AKA MGB) or a Rover 2000 P6. Many yonks ago, a less-glossy magazine fitted a P6 engine into an S1 Landy. They found it was OK ... until they fitted 750 tyres, after which it started to struggle against wind resistance ... it was over geared.
More anon, if anybody is interested.
In theb meantime, I'd be grateful for comments about fitting smaller tyres, smaller wheels, tubes, MGW, etc.
602
PS. Emissions are compared to the ruling at the time that the ENGINE was manufactured. My truck should be MOT exempt anyway, but hey, grab any points that are available.

Whoops!
The Jimny is BIGGER than the 80" S1 Land Rover. ... and looks right on 14" wheels

Ivor William plant and other trailers using Land Rover stud spacing (5x165), so that's not a problem, if available 14 inch would be a good place to start and fit 175/80R14 tyres, they start at 25.5 inches in diameter compared to the Land Rover 29.4 inch for a 205/80R16. IW do a 13 inch rim if that was ok then you could fit 185/70R13 tyres which would come out at 23.6 inch diameter, so maybe too small. If it was me i would see what is available wheel wise and work from there,a nearly worn out casing on what ever size wheel will confirm what would or would not fit clearance wise on the LR the front much more than the back.

205/80R16 tyres come out with a load rating of 900 kg per tyre giving you 1800 kg per axle.
Security list a 185/70R13 MT603 tyre with a higher load rating than some 205/80R16 so there should be a problem there.

Hi Mr Tyre,
Thankyou for your reply ... which I did not see until I had posted another related query, just five minutes ago. I seldom visit DIFFLOCK nowadays, as the forum seems/seemed to have moved to more modern machinery.
Your answers, above are very interesting. I will share them with the Series 2 Forum.
I'd clean your boots, but my tongue has run dry.

Hi Mr Tyre,
Thanks for your "heads up".
I "done some Googles", found lots of wheel and tyre combination, in a wide range of sizes, at acceptable prices. Thankyou.
I copied your reply onto the Land Rover Series 2 Forum.
Two further questions, pretty please.
1. Most of the replies were specifically about trailer wheels and tyres. Can I assume that the tyres will be marked TRAILER?
2. There any legal or technical reasons why a trailer tyre may not be used on a Land Rover?
I anticipate that my "dinky" will travel slower, but be more ambitious away from the traffic lights, and around roundabouts, and have a improved brake drum to tyre diameter ratio. I am still pondering about fitting 109" brakes ... bigger drums and TLS on the front.
Very early LWB rear brakes appear to be convertible to hydraulic + mechanical operation, which would allow me to fit an auto gearbox, if I can inveigle a way of threading the prop-shaft through the chassis cross-members.
IF SWMBO does ever gets her new knees, she will be restricted to "auto only" for a period.
OT ... I gave SWMBO three laps round Silverstone in a Ferrari, and again in an Aston Martin, for her 70th birthday. Howl of anguish when she climbed in.
"WHERE'S THE GEAR LEVER?" She had never met "paddle" shifft. But she was soon clocking 120mph. Bestest birthday prezzy only!

Looked at some pictures of a 185/70R13 trailer tyre this morning did not see anything saying 'TRAILER USE ONLY stamped on it.
The Security tyre matches and will exceed the load rating of some LR tyres, in some sizes so can't see a problem there.
If the tyres match exceed load capacity can't see a reason for anyone to query it.

Hi Mr Tyre,,
Thanks for that reply. I would clean your boots, but my tongue has run dry.
However, a lot rests on me not doing anything wrong, so I will have to cover my back by asking some Big Nebbie in the DoT back office, just to get something on official note paper. I'll probably ask the manufactures too. Let's face it, a Landy driving round on Mini wheels (I exagerate) is going to attract attention.

Ahem ... in the early 1970s, I bought some old 750 x 16 (12PR) truck tyres for my first Land Rover (1953 86"), for £1 each plus £1.50 to have them recut. I fitted them by hand using a pair of tyre levers. The ride was acceptable, but a puncture revealed that the tyres remained round, even with zero pressure. I know better now.

Just wondering where you have seen a Jimny on 14" wheels.
Did you have them on your Jimny and if so with what size tyres?
Standard are 15" and 205/70 R15 tyres.
That is the last generation Jimny 1998-2017/18

Just watched a tv programme "cop car workshop". In it was a new 4x4 vehicle for the rural policing team and the female commentator described the many features of the vehicle including "high and low range tyres".
Where can you get high and low range tyres from and if I fitted them to my Freelander 2 would they give me the equivalent of high and low range gears like you get on a Defender?

High and Low range tyres perhaps she is on about the quality of them, but as it's a police vehicle it will be covered by their national contract replacements, they usually get what listed, before now when dealing with Police i usually fit 4 the same and worry about it later.
Some of the 'low' range prices for 4x4 tyres go into my category of 'wheelbarrow tyres' as in i wouldn't fit them on a wheelbarrow.

As I've discovered over the years ~ you get what you pay for and often the cheaper is a false economy.

I think the commentator should have said "high and low range gears" but I thought I would play dumb just for a laugh and hopfully get some basic advice.

She also said the winch was 20 metres long, not the winch cable.

20 metre long winch, that would have some pull to it if you could the vehicle it's on still.
