...compared to Jap 4x4s?

I'm not trolling, it's a genuine question.

You can get a Cherokee/Grand Cherokee of only 10 years old with fewer miles for a lot less £ than a Jap 4x4 of twenty years or older with higher mileage.

When compareing the two, you'd think that Jeeps would rot, break down constantly and be terrible to drive. Why are they (relatively) so cheap?

Welcome AM

Don't know about the rot etc, but I expect it's something to do with possibly (again just a guess) higher insurance, more expensive spares and more things to go wrong, repair costs when they do go wrong for the jeep and the mcsh heralded bulletproofness of jap 4x4s and the abundance of spares and ease of repair when they do break.

Possibly also because they are expected to last longer.

My thoughts - anyone else?

I'd go with wot Nightbar said, but you have got it in one in the last line of your post.

What they said plus...

If that Jap 4x4 is say a 20 year old Land Cruiser... I would say the price gaps seem fair.

If that Jap 4x4 is something else (SJ, Vitara?) - well ebay suggests that Cherokee/Grand Cherokees of 10 years aren't any cheaper. In fact a fair bit more than you could pick up an SJ or a Vitara. Nice example or highly modified version break the mold so probably worth ignoring.

I think the pricing is pretty appropriate so you may have misjudged either the age you think some of those are or the price you think they are.

Now a 20 year old Cherokee I reckon you get an awful lot for your money. I think the reason you get more metal (ignoring lack of proper chassis) for your cash compared to a cheap vitara is due to the thirstiness of the engines. I think read somewhere the bigger petrol was pretty bullet proof but obviously that one drinks. Where the smaller petrols and diesels prone to problems? I have two friends both of which I took to pickup 20 year old Cherokees (XJ). The first was a 4.0l and was 500, the second was 2.5l and was a trade for a box of toys. Both were bargains I reckon. But those are 20 years old. But the 4.0l does drink. Not sure how bad the 2.5l is.

They're not all cheap either - wranglers seem to hold value pretty well.

I tend to think that 0ne thing is the cost of parts and the other is finding a garage that understands them .

when I had my XJ I had several problems that drove me mad trying to get it fixed mostly I think they do not see enough of them to understand how they work.

Also getting parts that fit can be a problem as they did tend to change stupid little things quite often.

Having said all of this I am thinking about getting another one a KJ liberty/cherokee diesel auto and I have found finding a good one at a good price not that simple for what it is worth.

I don't agree that Jeeps are cheap. It depends on how widespread the vehicle is in a certain locaiton. Perhaps in where you at there is plenty of XJ and it means that there is plenty of parts in stock. It all means that they will be more affortable than comparable SUVs that are less popular.

Based from experience in selling parts and car removal services, I'd say that the jeep spare parts are more expensive than the JAP 4x4 plus some of them are hard to find.
