After leaving my 55 plate Terrano over night I find that the clutch pedal has sunk nearer to the floor.
I can put my foot under the pedal to lift it back to the normal resting position and it's fine for the rest of the day.
The fluid level hasn't dropped.
Anyone any ideas what's happening?

that is a weird one My intital thought was the master cylinder is letting the fluid through to the wrong side of the seal and so letting the pedal drop
But then the spring on the pedal should keep the pedal up
How far is it dropping?
I think i remember that there is something about the pedal boxes in terrano's. I can't remember if it is the bushings that go or they crack I never had a problem though so may be talking ****!!!
I'm sure someone more useful will be along soon

Cheers J
The pedal drops approx half of its travel.I was thinking along the lines of the clutch master cylinder. I may even try to bleed it out at the weekend.
But what stumped me was no loss of fluid.

my 96 terrano pedal travels to the floor when light pressure is applied and needs lifting up. My suggestion is clamp the rubber hose at the slave cylinder end and see if it goes down over night. if it doesnt then its the slave. if it does its the master. hope this helps.

I had the same problem, it is the nylon bushes in the pedal unit.
A replacement unit cost 70 pounds plus.
What I done remove the spit pin, spindle & bushes,I
put a nylon castor wheel with the correct bore onto nut & bolt then put that into the chuck of an electric drill in the vice and with a small sharp wood chisel turned a double ended bush, removed from the drill and cut into two with a junior hacksaw.
fitted back into pedal unit and had no trouble since.

Thanks John thats something else to check. Have bled the system out but it still does it. Will check tomorrow.

Ive come across this problem on several other vehicles, admitedly they were all fitted with concentric slave cylinders ( slave and thrust bearing as one unit inside the bell housing) and in each case it has been air getting in through the slave seals, i would do as Andi p suggests, clamp off the hose over night if the pedal is still ok then its the slave at fault if the pedal drops its the master.

For the last 3 or 4 months, the clutch pedal on my wife’s Terrano has had an intermittent problem (once every month or so) and when it became a persistent problem (daily) I decided to change both the Master cylinder and the Slave cylinder. The fault was the master cylinder but both cylinders have done pretty much the same work so both had to go. The hydraulics bleed very easily and all was looking good until I spotted (in CSI fashion) an arterial spray from the flexi hose.
It appears that the flexi hose is a main stealer part only and I had to wait a couple of days for it. The hose that arrived had the same banjo end as the original for connecting to the slave but the chassis end was different. The parts chap was at a lose because he only had one hose listed for all models, petrol and diesel from 1993 to 2004.
My wife’s 98 petrol model does not have the damper on the clutch hydraulics but it had the block on the end of the flexi hose similar to the damper system hose. This block only had one female threaded hole for the metal pipe from the master cylinder unlike the damper system which I suspect had two threaded holes.
Both old and new pipes are the same length and by making a L shaped bracket with suitable holes in it and bolting this bracket to the original on the chassis, then by using a spring plate to hold the new flexi in, jobs done!
Why have I waffled on telling this story, if your running a similar year Terrano and you need to change this flexi, be ready to make up a bracket and locate a spring clip to hold the new flexi to the bracket!

Finally got round to checking this out . After clamping the hose overnight the pedal still went down. I have just ordered a master cylinder so will nedd to get it fitted asap as its getting worse.
Andy I will check out the plastic bushes when I'm changing the master cylinder.

I went to change the master cylinder today all went well. Until I discovered I had only half the plastic bush in the pedal.
Is this part available seperately?

Well changed the clutch master cylinder and all seems well. Will try and get the pedal bush replaced sometime soon.

I got told told that pedal and box come together, and for that privilege Nissan charge approx £100 + fitting, even Dick Turpin wore a mask.
If you go to B&Q and get some 10mm brass-(ish) cabinet ball catches (they come in a pack of two about £3.50, yes £3.50), cut the blank end off to get the ball out and drill out using an 8mm bit. Don't worry it's 8mm internal diameter anyway, then cut and file so it looks like a 'top hat' bush, with the hat side length approx 4-5mm. Make sure you file the lip that held the ball in at the 'brim' end. Don't file the brim off.
Do this to both of the catches and fit them either side of the clutch pedal.
Check that the fork that connects the pedal to the master cylinder piston isn't prised open, as the new bushes go in either side of the pedal and the fork straddles the bushes. The clevis pin then slots through and out the other side and is held by a split pin. If you cut and file them too short, you can shim or 'washer' them up.

HI ALL,LOOK IM HAVING A NIGHTMARE WITH MY NISSAN TERRANO 2.7TDI 1999, I BOUGHT THIS TERRANO WITH THE CLUTCH KNACKERED IN IT, I INSTALLED A BRAND NEW CLUTCH JUST OVER A YEAR NOW AND HAVE DONE JUST OVER 15000 MILES IN IT UNTIL ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO, I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING INTO GEAR, IVE BEEN ONTO A FEW WEBSITES TRYING FIND OUT ANY INFO AND SEE THAT OTHER PEOPLE ALSO HAVE HAD PROBLEMS ASWELL.
IVE CHANGED THE MASTER/SLAVE CYLINDERS[SECONDHAND ONES], BLED THE SYSTEM SEVERAL TIME AND AT ONE POINT THOUGHT I HAD SORTED IT WHEN I CHANGED THE MASTER CYLINDER ON SATURDAY JUST GONE,DROVE THE TERRANO FOR TWO DAYS THEN ON THE FOLLOWING DAY WENT OUT IN THE MORNING AND IT WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR WHEN THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING, IS THERE ANY ONE OUT THERE WHO HAS GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS, BEFORE I GO AND BUY NEW MASTER/SLAVE CYLINDERS,[ THATS IF IM SURE NEW ONE WILL CURE IT]. THANKS TONY

Turn your caps lock off please - you'll find you get more answers if you don't shout. All caps is not easy to read.
I assume you have checked the fluid level since it went pear shaped again.
Did you bleed the damper pipe as well? Nipple near back of car.

Sounds like hydraulic problems, using second hand hydraulic parts is never a good idea, Fit new parts and preferebly pressure bleed the system, and as Terrano says dont forget to bleed off the damper pipe at the rear.

Of no help but I had the same problem with my pedal not returning and difficult to get in gear on my 1996 2.7 .some days good some days crap . I had a new clutch fitted, replaced the pedal box with a second hand, one also the master cylinder, new slave cylinder bleed it ! bleed it again! I did how ever disgaurd the dampener and blanked it off as I was not paying £70 for a bit of pipe, got a blank plug from pirtex, In the end got chessed off and sold the car as spares or repair with the fault.

I had some of the issues that you are all having, however it turned out to be the pipe that was running all the way to the back of the car. Cut pipe and blocked it up, now my pedal is better than ever. I would recommend that you do this, gives you a better feel of the clutch...

The bush is usually the cause of the pedal sticking I have fitted over 15 of them now and have all been due to the poxy nylon bush wearing and if not done asap will wear the pin also.
Nissan only sell a complete pedal @ £136 + vat.
Look on ebay at item number 16128683091 for a replacement bush.

Hi forum,
is there or does anyone have a detailed drawing of the clutch pedal assembly ? I can't get down there to fit my new bushes and need to explain to my son how to fit them. Thanks

I had to wait a couple of days for the flexi hose, which is a primary stealer item. If you're running a comparable model and need to replace this flexi, you'll need to build a bracket and find a spring clip to secure the new flexi to the chassis.
