I'm thinking of fitting locking diffs front and rear on my Defender td5, which is fitted with ABS and traction control.

Will the TC interfere with the locking diffs?

I've done some research online but can't find a definite answer.

Are there Difflockers who have done this? Experiences?

Any recommendations as to which locking differential to choose?

Not sure how that would work, Jim. I've driven a range rover on one of those LR Experience off road days and it was amazing what it could do with the traction control. What is your Landy not doing that's making you consider lockers?

TC only kicks in once traction is lost in one or more wheels. In practice this means that, for example when going up steep terrain, you come to a halt, then TC kicks in and (with luck...) you get moving again. It's indeed quite amazing what it is capable of, but not as good as lockers. A limitation is that TC operates for a short time only (I think it is one minute), to stop the brakes overheating.

If you lock the diffs the TC doesn't see a speed difference between the wheels so doesn't do anything surely?

If you've got the rear and centre locker in but not a front and it starts spinning a front wheel it will still only brake the wheel that's spinning?

Seems logical to me but I've never tried it?!

I don’t see the problem, the diff locks will do the intended job and if it slips the TC will help, if no traction is lost it be dormant until needed if at all, it’s the same process in some high performance cars with LSD’s fitted, it will also not affect the ABS.

I had front and rear ARB lockers in my 90 TD5 with ETC, it worked great but I found I very rarely used the front locker as it reduces steering ability. I took out the front one (to fit to to the rear on my other 90) and fitted an Ashcroft ATB in the front. Im really happy with this setup. At the time ARB was the only option but if I was doing it today I'd fit Ashcroft locker in the rear and Ashcroft ATB in front (and centre).

ETC works well with, and complements the ATB, its not affected by the rear locker as it doesn't see any difference in wheel speed.

Although ETC is the same system as the D2 TD5, on the 90 it only works on each axle separately (both front wheels and/or both rear wheels) whereas on the D2 it is cross axle/all 4 wheels (i.e. any differential wheel speed, front to rear, side to side).

Hope this is of interest.

I have a 2001 TD5 110 with TC and ABS. I fitted a Detroit Locker to the rear and an ATB LSD to the front. From my perspective it's the perfect combo. requiring no leads, tubes etc. to activate. TC almost never activates but a quick dab on the brakes gets it working if and when.
