Hi,
I keep reading that if you hand your dash-cam "film" to the police as evidence, they may use other filmed incidents against you.
I'm not sure they can do that ... I think you have to swear that the film is a true account.
But assuming it is true, don't give Plod access to your film for 14 days, by which time it will be too late for them to take action against you (unless there you were involved an accident).
Surely Plod should caution you before accepting your evidence?
" But Officer ... I was tired, so I let my hitch hiker drive, and no, I didn't write down his details!"
Shouldn't Plod have a search warrant before viewing irrelevant sections of your film?

" But Officer ... I was tired, so I let my hitch hiker drive, and no, I didn't write down his details!" Or, my car is driverless!!!
Shouldn't Plod have a search warrant before viewing irrelevant sections of your film? Nope, as you have given it to them.

Hi Jojo,
So the police can produce "evidence" against a driver, without needing to produce a witness to verify where, when, or who was driving? Or even the identity of the car and or dashcam.?
If my dash-cam films a police car doing something naughty ..... ???
Hmmm! So I "borrow" a dash-cam from my neighbours car, use it in my car while doing something naughty, then return it to his car, all without his knowledge ....
Hmmm! (2)Is it possible to set the date/time on a dash-cam to sometime in the future, and then give evidence to that fact, if it suits me?

Hi 602,
Dashcam and CCTV images can be used as evidence and frequently are. The police and courts need to know where the images came from. Images from shops and town centre CCTV are from known fixed locations. From a dashcam the image file has time, date and coordinates on it, also other information such as speed. People have been done for speeding when they have been following a speeder to capture the evidence on their dashcam because it shows the speed they were doing.
If your dashcam spots a police car doing something naughty then it is up to you to decide what to do as your conscience and duty as an upright and responsible citizen dictates.
I wouldn't like to be your neighbour if you were to "borrow" my dashcam that way.
You may be able to set the time and date etc on some dashcams but to be sure you will need to read the instructions - but read them only as a last resort! Also, you can erase the data on a dashcam.
Dashcams are a very useful tool but like most things can probably be misused, but I'm sure no difflockers would even dream of such a thing.
Happy motoring,
Jojo
