Good day gents, any ideas about the following ?
I am about to commence investigations in the usual manner but thought a post now might yield some clue ...
Went abroad for ten days, left jeep by side of road near airport, came back and the Jeep (Cherokee xj diesel) is now very smoky when revved up, black smoke . A lot of black smoke , so much that it leaves a black patch on the road if stationary when revved up!
Also most worrying is an intermittent rattle that sounds like a loose rocker arm which only happens under light acceleration and not all the time.
Would a dysfunctional air flow meter give the above symptoms?
I'll be taking rocker cover off later to check those first of all...
Oh yes, been running on straight sunflower oil the last couple of weeks since the warm weather arrived, usually run a mixture of diesel and veg depending on temperature affecting viscosity.
Now have put in half diesel to see if any difference and a bottle of injector cleaner ... doesn't seem to be much different.

Thanks for the reminder Ged yes,
I changed the in line filter I have in the fuel line before the main fuel filter now. The main culprit was the air flow sensor .
I tested the one on there and found it not varying it's output signal at all so chucked it and replaced with a new one.
I expect everybody knows already but the ones for a Chrysler Grand Voyager with the same engine from '95-'99 seem to work fine once you rehouse the sensor into the jeep flow meter body. It's just a question of undoing the stupid hex/star with centre pin head screws that hold it in place.
Anyway, new MAF sensor made a lot of difference, cleaner running, more power, less smoke but still a fair bit of black when revved up.
I've put another bottle of injector cleaner in the tank, considering what next...
Remove injectors for service?
