|
|
|
Ex Mod 110 with a Disco 300 Engine and Transfer box. Retained Military LT77 Gearbox into 3.54 axles.
Since replacing the transfer box i now have a whining noise in 4th and 5th at higher speeds. I can slow down and it eases or give it more welly and drive through it.
Is the whining likely to be the new Tfer box or a mismatch in hardware across the drive train or something else altogether?

Lt77's aren't the most stable of things at the best of times. Was the clutch done with the engine swap? Welcome to the forum.

Yeah, the engine was done 3 years prior to the transfer, the issue only arose after the transfer but the fitter said the output shaft on the gbox would need attention within the next year or two. The whining was from the point of the transfer box fitting.
I wonder if it may in fact be my axle / prop, the sound 'feels' like its coming form further back anyhow. Had another listen on the way in.

If the noise came after the transfer box fitting it has to be the box. You could check the diff oil level and the colour of the oil, and check the condition of the UJ's and give them a greasing to see if that helps, but i'm not convinced.
The military have used R380's for a long while now, the transfer box ratio on a Discovery transfer box is 1.2, if you are thinking about fitting anything larger in diameter than 32 inch tyres you want to be looking for a 1.4 ratio Defender box instead if the current box is u/s

I still have my 1.667 so I can live with it til it blows if its the Transfer box. I'll be running it as largely stock so it'll stay in it's 7.50x16s

Don't know if you have run far with a 1.667 on but you will notice how much slower they go with them in, 1.667 is very popular with people running very large diameter tyres and stock 3.54 axles if you want to flog it on.

Obviously theabove poster (that maybe deleted soon) can tell you how to rbuild your diff using a HP 3D SPAM that will produce a diff that will be 1000 times stronger than steel
HP printers - yet another name to cross off my list of who to buy!

They don't want want to ban them - or how else can we be taxed through the nose to use them
